Whale Diary

10:00 - We headed out in the bay and it was glass like conditions today which was lovely. Not far out we spotted 1 humpback whale. This one was a very chunky individual and it came close to the boat and amazed all passengers. As we continued we found about 5 harbour porpoises. They stuck around for a little while and everyone on board got to see these cute little guys. The boat continued its journey and we found another humpback whale. It happened to be one of our regulars, Davy Jones. He is known for quite social behavior, but he took it to the next level. He appeared right next to us, ascending from the deep and the white pectorial fins were so visible. He was resting a bit in between the curious greetings. After spending a good amount of time with him we went to a minke whale. It appeared a couple of times, but we decided to spend more time with Davy. This time we were with the other rib boat from Whale Safari. Davy got super close to them and put his head out of the water to greet everyone. A very special moment for crew and passengers. On the way back we saw another minke whale and humpbacks in the distance. A very good tour!

12:00 - This morning we sailed out onto a beautiful morning. It was just slightly cloudy so we could enjoy the sun for a while. It didn't take us very long to find our firsts humpback whales. They were sleeping! They were very cute, they were sleeping next to each other on the surface. We stayed with them for some time before leaving to look for something more active. However, a few minutes later we found a third humpback and it was also sleeping. It looked like the whales today were having a nap all together. We also left and kept looking around. Then, we also found a forth humpback. This one was more active and came very close to the boat to check on us, and we could even see some beautiful fluke dives as well. Finally, before sailing back to the port a minke whale appeared to say goodbye. It was as shy as they normally are, but beautiful as always. However, we couldn't stay very long because we had to go back home.

20:00 - Our midnight tour started with fantastic sea conditions and visibility and despite some occasional rain the visibility was very good! We started by stopping by Akurey, one of the puffin islands to spot the charismatic birds! Then we decided to start our adventure in the bay and sailed for about 20 minutes before we spotted our first blow in the distance! We  carefully approached a humpback whale! As soon as we spotted our first whale and we looked around we started seeing some more blows in horizon! There were about 7-8 whales close by! We saw a whale just under a large flock of birds and decided to have a look once we got there the whale was lunge feeding! Amazing! We Stayed with it for a bit but we heard that another humpback was breaching close by! As we got there we saw it jump! Pec and tail slapping! What a fantastic day! As time ran out we started our way back to the harbour but on the way there we still crossed paths with a pod of white beaked dolphins together with another humpback and closer to the harbour a minke whale! A perfect midnight tour!
