Whale Diary

09:00 - For the first tour of the day, we decided to head north, along the coast, towards Akranes. And our bet paid off! It was exciting! It involved a lot of team work between crew and the passengers but we found a humpback whale! It was Davy Jones. We were glad to find this whale, and to be the first boat to see it and spend time with it. Davy wanted to dive for long periods, so we didnt see it on the surface a lot, but it was nice, and it gave us a couple of fluke dives. There was also a puffin in the area. Eventually we headed home.

10:00 - Even though the weather was not as sunny as yesterday, we still had nice calm sea and it wasn't too cold. So as we went out we encountered a pod of around 7 Harbor Porpoises. They were swimming around and showing off their cute little dorsal fins. Soon after we saw a blow, so we headed towards it. It was 1 Humpback Whale. It was surfacing quite nicely but refused to show it's fluke when it took a dive. After while we left it and found a pod of 7 White Beaked Dolphins. They were quickly swimming around our boat and showing us their little baby.

12:00 - Amazing whale watching this afternoon! We drove straight to where we had seen Davy Jones on the previous tour, and it was still there! We were the only boat in the place so we had the great humpback whale all to ourselves. It was very relaxed, moving very slowly, and coming repeatedly to the surface. We got lots of fluke photos. On the way back, we spotted a small group of harbour porpoises, around 5 of them. It was a very good tour.

13:00 - We headed out with calm sea and a little chilly temperatures, but it was still fine. The first thing we encountered was at the same time also the best, it was 1 Humpback Whale that was peacefully surfacing a few times and then he disappeared. All of a sudden it breached in a completely different direction, where we expected it to be. It breached again and then surfaced a few times with loud blows. But that wasn't all, shortly after and in close proximity there was a second Humpback that showed us a few times a very pretty fluke, high out of the water. What a great tour.

15:00 - An excellent finish to a great day. We set sail straight out towards Akranes, hoping to see Davy Jones again, but on the way there, we got word that there was another humpback whale not far form us to the South. We turned that way and after a short search, bingo! It was a gorgeous whale. At first it was mostly relaxed, and after some time, it started to display more activity, with several fluke dives. An excellent tour.

16:00 - We had nice conditions out on the water for our last tour of the day. Also we did find a nice Humpback Whale which was surfacing a few times, but he was too lazy to show us it's beautiful fluke. After we stayed with him for a while, we decided to leave it alone and look for something else and we did find something else. We found a pod of 8 White Beaked Dolphins with their baby. They were playing around our boat for a bit, but then we had to head back to the harbor. It was a nice tour to end the day.
