Whale Diary

10:00 - Today we expected choppy seas and cold winds, but with our overalls on we felt cosy and protected! Not even 2 minutes after we left the harbour we needed to slow down because another boat told us we had a minke whale around! We got to see this minke about 2 times, but it was very tricky to track. So, after giving it a couple of minutes, we decided to continue our trip, heading into the middle of Faxaflói bay. We started spotting many seabirds and it didn't take long until we spotted a big blow! A humpback whale popped up not far away from us! This one was spending around 6 min under the surface but we got to see it many times, and very close! While this individual was feeding down there, we saw a big splash on the other side and there was a 2nd humpback not far away from us! Amazing!! We then realised our time was running out and we headed to Akurey islet to see some puffins! There was loads of them, together with 4 grey seals. A fantastic tour to start our day!

14:00 - With some rain, we put on our waterproofs and headed out. Just as we were passing Engey, we spotted the back of one minke whale! This individual surfaced close and gave us some very nice surface sequences. There were some Northern gannets plunge diving and so it seemed like there was a plethora of food close to port.We wanted to get farther out into the bay and so we waved this individual goodbye and headed out. After a thorough sweep of the bay, unfortunately no cetaceans were spotted and so we went closer to home where the fish was aplenty. After a bit of a wet and wild journey, we stopped by the puffin islands to admire our feathered friends. There were plenty both on the island as well as in the water and at times we were surrounded by puffins! We also spotted one grey seal popping up by Engey island. As we admired the puffins, we spotted the blow of another solitary minke whale, so we went to check them out. This individual surfaced really close in front of us multiple times, we could hear them take a breath. We then had a second solitary minke surface close to us as well! After this exciting viewing we waved our wildlife goodbye and headed back to port. What a great afternoon!
