Whale Diary

11:00 - This morning, we had some sunshine highlighting the snow topped mountains as we set sail out into the bay. After a bit of a sail we spotted the blows of not one but two humpback whales! We have recently seen this pair hanging around our islands so it was lovely to see they are still around taking advantage of the food close to port. They surfaced nice and close which was amazing to not only be able to see but also hear the blows. They then treated us to a double fluke as they dove down to feed. These focused feeders then surfaced behind us. As we were watching this pair it also started to snow a bit, giving us a beautiful winter scene. After multiple surface sequences and another double fluke dive, we decided to look around to see if we could find any other cetaceans. After a bit of a thrilling ride, no one else was about and so we took a nice look around the city, had a unique view of Harpa, and went back to port. What a great start to the day!

14:00 - Today the sky cleared up a bit for our tour and we had a beautiful sunshine in the cold winds! The waves made the tour a bit bumpy and splashy but we had amazing views of the mountains covered in snow around us. Right after we left the harbour, we spotted a blow in the distance, in between the islands of Engey and Viðey! Getting closer to it, we had 2 humpback whales swimming side by side!! The blow was beautifully seen with the sunlight we had. We had a good look at them, until we decided to go for a round and see what else we could find. We passed by Viðey island, taking a look at the beautiful house of Skúli Magnusson and then going around. However, the waves and the wind were picking up as we left further and further, so we decided to go back for another look of the humpbacks. This time, we could have a good look of their flukes, as they were going down for a dive. Lovely tour with beautiful views!
