Whale Diary

10:00 - This morning the weather was amazing! A warm day by Icelandic standards and good sea conditions too! We headed out on 2 boats and not too long into our search, we found a large pod of 15-20 white-beaked dolphins. They were spread out over a large area and some were quite energetic! A few chose to come up to our boats and bow ride! We even had 2 jump right next to us! After a while the dolphins all moved away so we carried on our search and found 2 minke whales. These indivduals were not as playful as the dolphins so we only saw them a couple of times. However on our way back to the harbour, we found a third minke right outside the harbour entrance! We were able to see this minke much better, what a great end to the tour!

11:00 - This morning we sailed out with seas still calm, nice change after a few stormy days. We headed towards the area where we heard other boats were lucky this morning. As we sailed and got closer to the other boats we saw a few of very big splashes, white-beaked dolphins. It was a large pod of about 30 individuals spread out all around. They were very active, the splashes we saw were the dolphins jumping and they repeated the show even as we got closer. They also approached the boat and started bow riding, giving as a great chance to have a good look. As we were heading back to the harbour we spotted 2 minke whales, however the animals were moving very fast so we only managed to get a few quick glimpses.

14:00 - This afternoon, the sun was still shining! On our way out of the harbour, we quickly found the Minke Whale that had been close in this morning. It was swimming back out into the bay but we were able to watch it for a while before it disappeared. We then went further out and found a small pod of white-beaked dolphins. The pod had quite a few boats watching them so we stayed a little further away and our patience paid off! Two dolphins came right up to our boat. They were bow riding and jumping around us! We saw two quick glimpses of a Minke Whale, closely followed by the dolphins so we think they were chasing the minke! Once the dolphins swam away from us, we ran out of time and had to head back into the harbour.

15:00 - The weather was still holding up for our last tour of the day. We set out hopeful, having had good sightings in the earlier tours. We stopped for a quick visit to the puffins in Akurey and then we drove deep into the bay. The sea was still calm and overall conditions were good, and eventually we found a large pod of white beaked dolphins, around 20 of them. They were very active, being very conspicuous in their behaviour. They came quite up close to the boat, and jumped all over the place. The passengers were ecstatic, and after some time of pure enjoyment, we sailed back home.
