Whale Diary

20:00 - We sailed out under grey skies into the wind, heading to our beloved puffin island Engey where we greeted these amazing birds. Then we headed out into Faxaflói bay, the salty swell occasionally washing over us. When we turned course, we suddenly spotted a blow no more than a few hundred meters by us, a humpback whale appeared from the deep! This whale, who we recognised as the iconic Davy Jones II, was feeding. Suddenly, we saw another blow further ahead and soon enough the two whales had joined up and were interacting together, engaging in close behaviour that might’ve been playing or territorial establishment. Then, a third whale briefly joined them before heading off into the distance. The whales were tail throwing, pec slapping, tail slapping, and rolling all over, and even swam right underneath us whilst engaging in these very active behaviours, moving all over the place. After a while watching them, we had sadly ran out of time and had to make our way back to the harbour, but it was certainly a tour to remember!
