Whale Diary

10:00 - We headed out on a glorious day but the wind was a little breezy and the sea was a bit choppy. On the way out we stopped at Engey to see the small but mighty Atlantic puffins. Conditions were a little difficult as we headed further out on to the water but we could see some other boats so went to see what they had found. We were treated to the sight of a humpback whale diving a couple of times but it was a difficult whale and our other boats did not see it. So we had to drive much further out and it was a little splashy but beautiful visibility and spectacular views. We were lucky to find another humpback whale with some white beaked dolphins also in the area and playing around our boat. We enjoyed some excellent flukes and dives before all too soon it was time to head back to the harbour as it was going to be a long drive home.

12:00 - We started our journey with sunny skies and great views as we sailed into the bay, we sailed quite far as we heard rumours of a whale further away. As we reached the area we spotted a pod of white beaked dolphins first swimming around our boat very fast and saw some jumps in the distance! Not long after we spotted a blow as we got closer we saw a humpback whale traveling fast! we saw the whale dive a few times but eventually we had to start our journey back to the harbour as we were quite far. on our way back we still had time to stop in Akurey so see some cute puffins!

14:00 - Conditions were still quite choppy although the wind had dropped slightly as we headed back out in to the bay. We stopped to see the Atlantic puffins at Engey on the way out and had excellent views of the birds burrows. We knew the whales were quite far out in to the bay so we started driving. On the way out one of our boats spotted some white beaked dolphins so we also stopped to take a look but they were quite difficult so we carried on. Then the dolphins reappeared and we caught a few glimpses before again pressing on towards where we had seen humpback whales earlier in the day. Sure enough we sighted blows and were able to watch an individual diving frequently with some lovely fluke action. On the way back to the harbour we spotted some more dolphins and had at least five individuals, a nice sighting on the way back. A glorious day with beautiful views and some great whales and dolphins!

16:00 - This afternoon we sailed straight out further into the bay, after 45 minutes of sailing we spotted a blow ! A humpback whale was resting coming regularly to the surface and then fluking into the water! we spend some time with this whale with it resurfacing quite close to our boat so we could have a good look! As time was running out we started our journey back to the harbour with a quick stop in Akurey to see some puffins! A great summer day out in the ocean.

17:00 - This evening we headed out back into the sunny faxafloi. We were eager to get out as we knew we had a bit of a sail ahead of us. The sail was quite rough and ready but worth it as we found a humpback whale! This whale was a very calm individual, coming up regularly and even showed the fluke! It started a little fluke-shy but we did get to see it a few times which is always magical. It surprised us twice as it came very close to the boat! We stayed for a bit but eventually had to start our return journey. On the way back we stopped at Akurey to have a closer look at the pufins! We did see them at sea as well, but at Akurey the tide was perfect to let us get a closer look at one. There was a few individuals that let us come very close and of course lots at sea, land and flying all around us.

20:00 - This evening we sailed with sunny skies and a bit of swell! We first stopped by Engey to check out some puffins and then sailed further out into the bay. After sailing for about 40 minutes we spotted a blow! A humpback whale! We saw this whale diving multiple times and showing of it´s fluke, then the whale came up super close to our boat and rolled showing a bit of it´s pectoral fins! Eventually we had to start our journey back to Reykjavik after a great trip under the beautiful midnight sun.
