Whale Diary

10:00 - It was a glorious tour this morning! We set out with great weather, clear skies and lots of sun. We started with a visit to our puffin friends in Akurey island, and then we moved on deep into the bay, where after a bit of search we saw a Minke whale and further away we found 2 humpback whales in succession. The first one breached right in front of us! It was amazing and then it kept displaying lots of surface activity so everybody was very pleased and got great photos. The second whale was very good too, and even though it didnt breach, it kept showing its fluke so it was really good. After that we started our way back.

12:00 - With blue skies and the sun shining we headed out of the harbour where it was much breezier. We first stopped at Akurey to check out the thousands of mighty Atlantic puffins resting and flying around the island. The Arctic Skuas were putting on some fabulous chases trying to steal the puffins´ food. As we headed out further into the bay conditions were quite choppy and bouncy with a bit of spray making for an exciting ride. Happily for us as we got further out the sea calmed down a little and we were able to find a humpback whale. We stayed there and watched that whale as it gently cruised through the water very slowly, making regular dives and giving us a fantastic view of its fluke. It was spectacular watching it in the sunshine with the stunning views of Iceland all around. Great day to be out on the water but all too soon we had to return to the harbour!

14:00 - This was another very successful tour! We found again, quickly enough, the 2 humpback whales we had found earlier, and again, the first one breached as we were getting near! It was a great welcome, and we stayed with them for quite some time, enjoying their company as they dived and resurfaced. People got great photos and spirits were very high, made even better by the great weather. As we were coming back, we spotted two different groups of white beaked dolphins, totalling around 10 animals. Complete success.

16:00 - The sunny skies and calm seas seemed promising so we sailed out with a lot of hope to Faxaflói bay. We started by stopping in Akurery to see the amazing Atlantic puffins flying all around us. Then we decided to start our adventure further out at sea. Other boats gave us the information of the location of the last sighting so we started there scanning the area for blows! Then we saw our fisrt humpback whale! At first we gave it some space as there was other boats in the area but as they left we approached the whale carefully and we could enjoy it all to ourselfs! The whale was traveling slowly following the same pattern on every resurface and we could see the shade under the water very clearly everytime it came close to the surface. As we were getting ready to leave we had an unexpected surprise! Two white beaked dolphins showed up and got super close to our boat! The dolphins were swimming between the whale and our boat and we could see their beautiful pattern as they bow ride our waves. Eventually we decided to return to Reykjavik but not without one last fluke dive!

20:00 - We started our tour with very nice weather, the sun was shining through the clouds and it wasn‘t cold. We had some big waves, but the guests liked the ride. We were checking all the previous locations where we have seen whales during the day, but we couldn't find them. Lots of birds were around, which was also nice to see. On our way back, we spotted a blow, so we headed straight towards it. We were so happy to see the 1 Humpback Whale. It was a very calm and friendly one. It surfaced a few times and came pretty close to the boat. It showed us it's fluke a few times and then we had to go back. It was a nice ending to the tour and everyone was happy, that we managed to find a whale, which was so nice to watch.
