Whale Diary

09:00 - Great morning! We started with a quick visit to the puffins in Akurey, next we drove off far out, and we found a pod of 5 white beaked dolphins. Then we pushed on and found a small pod of harbour porpoises, also 5. Great sighting! On the way back we found a minke whale, very active, lunge feeding. And a harbour seal!

10:00 - The weather conditions were very good and the sea state was very calm. We didn't have to go out very far before we found our first cetaceans - 2 Harbor Porpoises, were showing themselves very nicely, but only for 2 times. So after waiting a little bit, we moved on and tried to find something else. Not long after we got lucky again and found a pod of 8 White Beaked Dolphins, that had a little baby with them. So we enjoyed their presence for quite a while before they left us. To top it off we found a Humpback Whale at the end of the tour, which was very nice to see. It was Davy Jones, he was fluking and surfacing very calmly. A full success.

12:00 - An amazing afternoon of whale watching! We started by looking for the minke whale we had seen in the morning, not far. And we found it! And it was still as active and interesting as before, lunge feeding and showing a lot of surface activity. Next, we stopped by Engey, where we could see some puffins, and everybody was delighted. After, we drove far out, and after not much wait, we found a humpback whale! This was Davy Jones, one of our old friends. Davy was swimming in circles, feeding, and doing the occasional fluke dive. The passengers took good photos and learnt all the details about these cetaceans. Great tour.

13:00 - Bright sun, blue skies and calm seas made for an amazing tour this afternoon. We headed out into the bay and started to search the areas where the whales and dolphins had been seen on the previous tours. At first, we couldn't find any cetaceans but then we spotted a large blow in the distance. When we arrived, we saw that it was a humpback whale and a very famous individual too! It was our friend Davy Jones II! He was surfacing very frequently and coming very close to our boat! The water was so clear that we could see the whole body of the whale through the water. After watching Davy for a while, some other boats started to arrive so we headed back into the harbour so we weren't overcrowding the whale.

15:00 - It was great weather and flat seas, and we had seen plenty of wildlife ealier so we were hopeful. Unfortunately, despite covering a wide area, we couldn't find more than a minke whale in the distance. We gave out complimentary tickets.

16:00 - The conditions were really nice, the sun was shining, the sea was calm. We checked the spots where we have seen the whales before. Unfortunately they left the bay for the afternoon and we couldn't find anything. So we at least had a nice RIB ride and we gave the guests complimentary tickets so they could try again on the larger boats.
