Whale Diary

11:00 - This morning, we had a little bit of rain and some wind but still good conditions to go out whale watching! We headed out with a plan to spread out, one boat north and one boat south, but then we got a call from another boat saying they had found a humpback whale! We headed to the area, just in time to see the whale going down for a dive. We only had to wait 5-6 minutes for the whale to come back up to the surface though. We stayed with this whale for a while and it gave us some really good looks at its bright white fluke! After a while, we decided to leave the whale in peace and went to search some other areas. One boat managed to find a minke whale that they could see a few times before we all headed back to harbour. Before we got back to the dock, we stopped by the puffin islands to have a look at the adorable birds settling in for the breeding season.

14:00 - This afternoon we headed back towards where we had got lucky in the morning. Before even reaching the same spot we found a few boats waiting for something to come up. After a bit of patience we realised we were watching the same humpback whale as in the morning! It was taking longer dives to begin with without surfacing too much in between. But then things started to change. It would now surface quite a few times, with shorter dives. We got a great look at it´s fluke too! After a nice look we went in search of more but didn´t see anything else. On our way back we stopped to look at the many puffins and other seabirds on Akurey.
