Whale Diary

12:00 - The weather was nice, a fresh breeze of icelandic air and a little rough sea. We went out into the bay and saw a minke whale, surfacing very quick. We waited for it, but it didn´t come back up again. So we went further out and found 2 humpback whales together. They were just resting and taking shallow dives. After a while we decided to leave them alone and we also spotted another blow, not far away. As we got there we saw that it was a small humpback juvenile playing with a pod of 10 white-beaked dolphins, which had around 3-4 calves with them! The humpback was rolling around, showing us and the dolphins its white belly. It was adorable to watch. But we ran out of time, so we had to leave and saw goodbye to these cuties !

14:00 - We quickly got dressed and went to our boat. We sailed out from Reykjavik port and not long after we spotted our first humpback whale. It was a big individual that soon we realized that was cruising in the same area with 2 more humpback whales that were feeding together. We went close to investigate this amazing sighting. After this we continued our search and it dint took long until we came across a pot of 4 white beaked dolphins that were feeding close by with two minke whales. We stayed with them until the time was up and we started our way back. On our way to Reykjavik port we managed to spot a pod of 5 harbour porpoises that made our tour even more special.

15:00 - The weather was quite nice, the sea a little calmer than before and we went out to look for some whales. We also found a minke whale, stopping by very quickly. A little further out we then found in total 6 humpback whales. But only 2 of the 6 were "hanging out" as a pair. Two of the solitary ones came close to our boat to check us out, but disappeared then after a while. The other one was very far in the distance, but we could see it breaching and pec slapping. As always, all good things must come to an end, also this tour, so we headed back to the harbour.
