Whale Diary

11:00 - This morning the bay was sunny when we got ready to head to the ocean, and then we had a misty cloak come over as we headed out. There was a little bit of swell which made for quite a fun ride! The two boats had slightly different routes at the beginning, one went to the sun voyager and the other a bit of a longer sail to the whale fjord. However we ended up in the same spot, which was 2 humpback whales! They seemed to be resting for a bit but then woke up a little! We saw a few fluke dives, some very close to us as well! We stayed a little bit before going for another sail to find another species. One boat got a glimpse of harbour porpoises! And then went on to find a minke whale! We were essentially already out of time so saw it a few times before having to head home!

14:00 - The sky was clearing up a bit during this afternoon tour giving us beautiful views on the mountains near Reykjavik. The two humpbacks from this morning were still close to Videy. We approached and observed them swimming close to each other, seemingly resting. Other boats arrived so we decided to leave to not crowd thoses nice humpbacks. We scouted the area for a while and crossed the path of many sea birds but no cetacean. So we came back to our humpbacks, the other boats had left so we had them for ourselves. We could see a few gracious fluke dives and the blow very visible in the cold air. The dives weren't very long so we enjoyed a few nice sequences of those large animals swimming sometimes close to our boat. Once out of time we came back to the harbour, with cold hands but happy of our encounter.
