Whale Diary

10:00 - Today was a busy day with three boats leaving at the same time to spot some cetaceans! Each tour was of course a little different to each other but we all communicate and try to spot the same wildlife. Two boats stopped at the puffin island first and then sailed out where as the third boat sailed straight out and then ended at the puffin island. At sea there was all sorts of weather, we saw a rainbow, we got caught in the rain and had sunshine and even a bit of sleet! Truly adventurous sail out. We then spotted a blow! This blow belonged to a big humpback whale! This is one of the largest cetaceans we see here regularly and its always magical to see them! This one was quite fluke shy and mainly having shallow dives. It had a bit of a stinky breath, so we assume it was quite the busy forager today. One boat also saw a seal by one of our puffin islands which was a nice little bonus sighting. Everyone had a great time and would've loved to stay out longer, but it was time to return to the harbour.

14:00 - The winds had calmed down a little in the afternoon, and with high spirits we left the harbour to see what Faxafloi Bay had to offer. We made a brief stop by Akurey island to observe the Atlantic puffins. There was plenty, and they sure lived up to their adorable reputation! We continued out further and soon stopped because a harbour porpoise popped up just next to us. It was quite fast on its way, but we were able to see its triangular little dorsal fin once more. Heading out further, we soon saw a tall blow - to our delight it came from a humpback whale! We stopped to watch a few beautiful dive sequences. Rumors had it that there was another humpback whale in the area, so we decided to see for ourselves. Sure enough, there was another humpback. This individual dived for a bit longer, but we were able to see it gorgeous fluke a few times. Surrounded by the whale, plenty of different seabirds, and even some sunshine, we were all filled with joy when returning back to Reykjavik.

20:00 - Our evening was a bit more calm in terms of boats and we were the only RIB out in the bay looking for whales. The weather was a bit choppy, with waves, wind and rain. But we also had a boat full of adventurous people, happy to experience what nature had to offer us today. Our search took us to an area filled with various species of marine birds, likely feeding on small fish, such as sand eels. Among the birds, we spotted a humpback whale, who surfaced multiple times, with short dives in between. We left this whale after spending some time with it, and continued our search. It was followed by a second humpback, this time slightly larger and closer to Reykjavík. We saw this whale surfacing a few times, before heading back to some well-appreciated dry land.
