Whale Diary

10:00 - We set off this morning enjoying the rain but excited for the day ahead. To start with we stopped at Akurey to look at the puffins that have been breeding over the summer. We even saw a couple of pufflings (baby puffins) for the first time this season. Then we headed out into the depths of the bay. As we headed out we noticed a lot of boats in an area. So we avoided this for a bit due to our code of conduct and trying to minimise our disturbances on the whales. So we looked around and found some seabirds feeding but no cetaceans joining in. Then after a bit we headed to where the boats had been and we found a Humpback Whale was there! It came right up to us so we had a great view of the whole body. It then stayed very close with us for a long time until we decided it was time to go back to the harbour after a lovely morning enjoying the whale and the rain.

12:00 - Today's weather was overcast and rainy, but thankfully it wasn't too cold. Despite the drizzle, we were eager to set sail from the harbor in search of marine life. Our first stop was at Akurey, where we enjoyed watching some puffins. Their vibrant colors and lively behavior always bring a smile to our faces and set a positive tone for the rest of the trip. After leaving Akurey, we headed out in search of whales. After some time, we spotted a Humpback Whale from afar. As we got closer, we observed it engaging in short dives, each lasting around 3-4 minutes. Each time it surfaced a few times before giving us the grand finale of a fluke dive. The regularity of its dives allowed us to appreciate its majestic presence up close. Satisfied with our time with the humpback, we decided to venture further in hopes of finding more marine life. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we didn't encounter any other whales or dolphins. As our time on the water came to an end, we headed back to the harbor. The experience of watching the Humpback Whale so closely was truly memorable. We look forward to our next adventure, hoping for clearer skies and more exciting encounters with the wonders of the ocean.

14:00 - Once again we set off by starting at Engey to look at the puffins. It was a lovely start to the tour as we got to see many of them all over. Then we headed out with the rain holding off for a little bit. There was even a little bit of a blue sky (it didn't last long though unfortunately). Then we headed off to find some more marine wildlife. After searching for a little bit we saw a blow behind us. It was a Humpback Whale again! The same one as on the 10:00 tour. It was again fairly relaxed surfacing regalarly with short dives. It also came pretty close to us again which was really cool. We saw it go for a few fluke dives as well getting everyone really excited. Then as the rain started to get heavier we also decided it was time to head back after a really nice tour.

16:00 - Today, we embarked on a thrilling whale-watching adventure, undeterred by the rain and fog. Our journey began with a visit to Puffin Island, where we admired the vibrant puffins amidst the island's beauty. From there, we sailed further out to sea, our excitement mounting despite the misty, grey surroundings. Our patience was soon rewarded when we spotted a Humpback Whale, which came remarkably close to our boat multiple times, offering an unforgettable encounter. Continuing our quest, we searched for more marine life and eventually found another humpback, though it surfaced only briefly before we turned back towards the harbor, each of us still buzzing with the day's extraordinary sights.

20:00 - What a beautiful evening to be out in Faxafloi Bay. We had two boats heading out and the rain that had blighted us all day finally abated, and the seas had calmed into a gentle rolling swell. We were able to find white beaked dolphins out in the bay and also spotted Humpback Whale blows in the distance along with some feeding birds. Both boats were treated to some amazing views of a humpback diving and it's beautiful fluke. We also spotted a couple of minke whales and enjoyed the rotting fish smell of minke whale blow! We made a stop at the puffins and enjoyed the sounds and sights of thousands of birds before calling it a night and returning to the harbour.
