Whale Diary

12:00 - This morning, we sailed out into a grey bay under grey skies, but with good vibes onboard! Soon, we spotted our first whales, a pair of humpback whales who were peacefully swimming at slow speed! We watched them for a few minutes before leaving them to enjoy their slumber, and headed south. On the way there, we noticed some bubbles next to us, and out of the deep came a minke whale! This whale was using bubbles to feed! As we lost sight of the minke, we spotted some dark silhouettes rise from the water in the distance that we immediately recognised as lunge feeding humpbacks! As we were approaching the whales, a pod of 2-3 white-beaked dolphins suddenly appeared next to us, and one of them began leaping over and over again! After the dolphins slowed down, we enjoyed the presence of the bubble-netting and lunge-feeding whales, one of whom we recognised as Davy Jones II! As time passed, we found more dolphins, who made their way over to the whales to feed and swim alongside them. At this point, we sadly had to say goodbye to the whales and head back to harbour. But what a fantastic tour this was!

14:00 - We went out this afternoon with choppy seas, but beautiful Northern gannets following our boat! They were everywhere and we got to an area where they were so many, plunge diving into the surface and giving us quite a show! On our first part of the tour, we also saw a fast minke whale, so fast that no one saw it ever again! Then, a different dorsal fin, a small pod of 5 white-beaked dolphins that slowly started to bowride. We continued our trip as they were disappearing quite often and we saw 2 big blows in the distance: 2 humpback whales lunge feeding! They were beautifully coming up to the surface with their mouths wide opened. Even before we saw them, we could track them several times because of the amount of bubbles around our boat very close!! They were, indeed, close, and we were trapped! They were also moving fast, so we couldn't move much as well. Them, we spotted another blow, and it was a-our beloved Davy Jones lunge feeding alone! We could also see the many bubbles before this massive whale came up. What a show, together with the many gannet around!

15:00 - This afternoon we sailed out onto the bay very excited to see what was ahead of us. We spotted a pair of humpback whales, they were feeding using bubble nets and doing lunge feeding in the surface. We spotted a blow in the distance, so we also decided to check it out. On the way there, we found a minke whale. It was a little shy, but we could see it a couple of times before we lost track of it. We continued on our direction and we encounter another humpback whale doing the same thing that the other two but alone. After spending some time with this whale we decided to leave and pass by the first two to say goodbye before going back to the harbour.

19:00 - This evening, the ocean was calmer and we enjoy a relaxing ride on the rib boat. On our way out, we found a pod of 4 harbour porpoises. They didn't stay with us for a very long time but we could see them very well every time they surfaced. We spotted a blow in the distance so we decided to go and check it out. It turned out to be a humpback whale. This whale was very friendly and it came very close to the boat a few times. Also, every time it went down for a deep dive it showed us its beautiful fluke. We didn't want to bother this whale too much so we decided to check some blows in the distance. On our way there we found a minke whale. We only saw it once, so we decided to continue our way to the blows. This other humpback was not as friendly as the first one so after a few minutes we decided to go and check a pod of 10 white beaked dolphins. They were actually mating! It was a very beautiful encounter, some individuals bow rode with us for a while and some were even breaching. Sadly, we run out of time and we had to go back to the port.
