Whale Diary

09:00 - Despite the windy, overcast weather and some swell, we headed out with high hopes for a great whale-watching adventure. Not long after leaving the harbor, we found ourselves near a humpback whale! It was doing relatively short dives, so we decided to stay with it for a few minutes. To everyone’s delight, the whale came quite close to our boat, giving us all an unforgettable close encounter. As we continued on, we caught glimpses of a couple of harbor porpoises before they disappeared into the waves. They were quick, but it was still a nice addition to our sightings for the day. Before heading back, we made a stop by Engey, where we were pleasantly surprised to spot some puffins still hanging around, even though most have already left for the season. It was a perfect way to wrap up the trip, with a mix of excitement and a touch of Icelandic wildlife!

10:00 - This morning was a little choppy but that made our journey out into the bay more fun! In the end, we didn't have to sail very far out before seeing our first whales. Quite close in to the shore, we found 2 humpback whales! They were resting separately, both surfacing slowly and moving sleepily through the water. We were able to stay with them both for a while before searching further out. We found a small pod of harbour porpoises but only managed to see them once before we went back to end the tour with the humpback we found first in the morning.

16:00 - The wind had picked up from the morning, but the sun was trying to peek through, giving us a bit of both worlds—some sunshine and some swell. We headed out, and after just a few minutes, we caught sight of a humpback whale cutting through the waves. It was doing long dives, so we stayed with it for a little while, watching as it gracefully disappeared and reappeared in the swell. Eventually, we moved on and found another humpback. This one wasn’t as shy, with shorter dives and what looked like feeding behavior. The excitement on board was palpable as everyone got a good look. As we headed back, the mood was upbeat and happy, and we made a quick stop by Akurey. We were lucky to spot some of the last puffins of the season, a perfect way to wrap up the trip!

17:00 - In the evening, the wind had picked up a bit so our tours were a little bit splashy. This meant that our passengers got a full Icelandic experience! We headed out into the bay, staying close to land so we were a little more sheltered. We got very lucky and had 2 humpback whales close to shore! They were in two different areas but were both nice to follow and even with the wind, the blows were easy to spot. While we were waiting for one of the humpbacks to surface after a dive, we also spotted a very small minke whale! This individual must have been very young so it was great that we were able to see it, especially given the conditions! Soon our time ran out and we had to head back into the harbour again.
