Whale Diary

09:00 - As the days get shorter, the night grows longer and everything gets colder - we wrapped up in lots of layers and set sail with the sunrise. We only sailed 20min and already spotted a blow. This was a humpback whale, but wait it was not one, not two, not three but four!! This is quite special and a wonderful way to start the day. They were quite synchronised and coming up together, we had one individual that always had a lazy fluke dive but the other three showed nice high flukes! We stayed for a bit but once 2 more boats arrived we made a move. We didnt sail long when we spotted another blow but this humpback  went for a fluke dive immediately. We then saw another (!!) blow and went to have a closer look. This one came really close and showed us the fluke again and made our tour total 6 humpback whales! While waiting here we even managed to see a small pod of 3 harbour porpoises! We eventually started our return journey and saw 2 more (!) humpback whales and a minke whale right by Engey, only 2 minutes from the harbour!

12:00 - This afternoon the sun was now up and shining brightly, if it wasn't cold you'd think it was summer! As we left the harbour we started off slowly to make sure we didn't miss anything that we spotted last tour! It seemed the animals had made a move so we picked up speed ad headed out into the bay. We had a bit of a sail and then spotted a big blow! We changed course towards it and as we got closer we discovered it was 2 humpback whales! These two were very relaxed and came incredibly close. It was amazing to see. They seemed to be travelling at a very relaxed speed and let us sail next to them for a bit. Of course we didn't want to bother them for too long so eventually continued sailing. We quickly spotted more blows! We found 2 more humpback whales, it was the lovely lady Neila and a friend! Both again came very close, and showed the fluke multiple times and Neila even was rolling on her side a bit. We stayed a little bit longer but then had to head back to harbour.

15:00 - We went out this afternoon under the beautiful light of a lower sun. We had a first stop to try to see 2 harbour porpoises,  but those elusive creatures did not show up again. The low sun was brightening the blows of whales, so we spotted them from miles away. We approached carefully and could admire for a good moment 3 humpback whales. They were clearly swimming with each other, synchronized in their breaths and dives. It was amazing to see them from so close all alone with them. One of them showed a little bit its head while surfacing, maybe trying to have a quick look at us, another one had the tip of the pectoral fin popping out of the water while diving, which is unusual. They started to be more and more calm, probably even sleeping, one of the whales was logging for a couple of minutes. We decided to leave them alone and continued further. A couple of minutes later we were with another trio of humpbacks, close to each other. One of them was Neila. There was also a minke whale that surfaced a couple of times. These humpbacks were a bit more active and one of them rolled on its belly diving with the fluke upside downm facing the sky. After a last fluke dive from those three friends we slowly left the area and had a smooth drive to the harbour.
