Whale Diary

10:00 - After all the stormy days we've been having, the sea conditions this morning were amazing! Calm seas! After a stop at Akurey to see lots of puffins, we headed out to try and spot larger animals. Not too long into the tour, we spotted 2 minke whales but these individuals were a little shy. We waited a little while but decided to move on when we saw splashes in the distance. When we got there we saw that it was a pod of around 15-20 white-beaked dolphins spread out in a large area. Some of the dolphins weren't interested in us at all but a few of them were very curious and playful! A couple were even jumping right next to the boat! Once the dolphins got bored of us, we moved on and started to see minkes in all directions! At least 6 in a large area. We found a well known individual called Humpy the minke and we were able to watch Humpy come to the surface close to the boat a few times before having to head back to the harbour. An amazing start to the day!

11:00 - The sea conditions were perfect as we sailed out after a quick stop for puffins at Engey. Soon we enconutered avbout 10 harbour porpoises that gave us good views. A little further out in the bay there was more bird activity and there we saw several minke whales that surfaced many times, also close to the boat. Nearby we spotted a pod of about 6 white-beaked dolphins that were very inquisitive about the boat, swimming under it and riding the bow wave, an amazing encounter! We looked further and found more minke whales that brought the total to about 10, a great trip!

14:00 - We started by paying a short visit to the puffins in Akurey. As we headed out into the bay the wind was picking up a bit but the sea conditions were still good. We first saw some harbour porpoises but the encounter was very brief. We then spotted an elusive Minke Whale so we headed on for a pod of several white-beaked dolphins and we all got some great views when they surfaced close to the boat. Time was now getting short so we headed back to harbour after a nice wildlife encounter.

15:00 - The wind had definitely picked up this afternoon and as we headed out, it started to rain. However, the conditions were still good to go look for wildlife! We stopped at Akurey again to see many puffins in the water. Then we headed out into the bay. We went to the areas where we were lucky this morning but it seemed that everyone had moved on. After searching in some other areas, we found a pod of 5 white-beaked dolphins that were very playful and curious of the boat. A couple of them were jumping and we could see their bodies through the water many times. The dolphins swam off after a while and we went searching again. We found 2 more pods of dolphins, one was just 2 dolphins and the other was made of 10 individuals. These ones weren't interested in us at all, however we then found a large group of puffins and arctic terns feeding but no whales or dolphins had found these fish yet! We started to run out of time then so had to head back into the harbour.
