Whale Diary

12:00 -The skies are beginning to clear from the mist left behind by the recent volcano eruptions. We sailed out strait towards the open waters with better conditions than the previous days. It dint take long before we encountered our first group of 5 white beaked dolphins. They where really playful, cruising and jumping around filing us with energy and exactment for the day ahead. We spent quite some time with them, simply enjoying their presence. Not long after, we spotted our first blow in the distance. Curious we headed straight toward it and sure enough, it was a large humpback whale. We stayed with it for a while watching it feed and even catching glimpses of its fluke. A beautiful sight. In the same area, we also came across two minke whales. After some time , we began making our way toward Akurey island to visit some of our smaller favorites, our puffins

14:00 -  A nice breeze greeted us this afternoon as we made our way to our first stop, the island of Akurey with its stunning puffins who darted all around. Then, we moved further south in search of whales! We had heard rumours about a whale being spotted in a certain area, so we made our way there and were soon met with a humpback whale! This humpback gracefully lifted its tail fluke for us, before disappearing into the depths. In this same area, we could see a lot of birds circling above and also 3-4 minke whales! On our way back to the harbour we were excited to find a small but playful pod of 4-5 white-beaked dolphins who leapt around us, wake riding and bow riding with us, and even swimming right under us as if they were checking us out! What an amazing tour this was!

16:00 -  We sailed out under clear skies and calm seas finally the weather had cleared. We headed straight toward Akurey island, home to thousands of puffin pairs. We stopped to say hello to our little puffin friends, who were as charming as ever. Not long after our stop we spotted a pot of 5 white beaked dolphins. Amazing creatures, really playful cruising and jumping around us filling us with excitement for the tour ahead. After spending some time with them we continued our journey in search of something bigger. Before long. we came across two minke whales feeding in the same area. It was a wonderful sight. Even more special was how curious they were, approaching our boat, which is quite rare for usually elusive species. Along the way, we also encountered more dolphins, adding to the excitement. Eventually , we began our return journey back to the harbor, satisfied with another beautiful day at sea.

20:00 -  What an incredible tour. The vog had cleared a little as we headed out in to the Bay, giving us glimpses of Esja and a sneak peak of sun. The sea was mirror calm and we enjoyed the puffins at Akurey all chilling on the water. We carried on our journey and it wasn´t too long before we saw some feeding birds and spotted our first minke whale. It was a little elusive so we continued, and realised there were minke whales everywhere. The flat calm sea made for excellent minke whale viewing. We had some good sightings and even saw a pair of minkes together, which is not something we see so often. We were quite keen to find some humpback whales as well so we continued further out. The grey sky and sea were merging together but we caught sight of something larger and black in the distance, and then saw the fluke of a humpback, still some distance away. We made it to the area where the whale was and it surfaced quite near to our boat. We stayed to watch it for a while and then decided to join our other boat which was heading for another humpback. Well good job we did. We arrived just in time to see no less than four humpbacks bubble-netting and lunge feeding, with some white beaked dolphins playing around in the general melee and lots of birds feeding. Incredible! After we arrived the humpbacks split into two pairs, so one boat stayed with each pair. We were lucky to witness multiple displays of bubble netting and lunge feeding. Our pair of humpbacks were even joined by a third humpback. In the distance everywhere we looked were minke whales and the sea and sky was full of birds. It was a very special evening and very much enjoyed by our guests, drivers and guides!
