Whale Diary

10:00 - This morning was a grey day but we are celebrating the First Day of Summer here in Iceland so we headed out into the bay full of optimism! There was a bit of swell so we had a fun adventure on our way out past the islands. After sailing around a little bit, we spotted some splashes in the distance - it was a small pod of 3-4 white-beaked dolphins. These individuals were very curious and came up to the boat multiple times. We could see their bodies through the water, it was incredible! After a little while, they got tired of socialising with us and we decided to head off to search some other areas. We then came to another area with a super pod of dolphins! There were at least 100 dolphins all swimming together! Then we spotted some birds that had 3-4 minke whales feeding underneath them. Some of the minkes were a little bit shy so were difficult to follow but others came fairly close to the boat. It was amazing to see them feeding under all the birds and one of them even blew a bubble under the water! After this, we unfortunately had to head back to the harbour. On our way back, we had a very brief glimpse of around 3-4 harbour porpoises but all passengers and crew were very happy with our morning!

14:00 - We headed out onto grey, calm waters, eager to spot all that we could in these pristine conditions. We definitely had our work cut out for us, as the whales seemed to be rather shy this afternoon. Nothing could stop us though, as we spotted 3-5 minke whales in an area. They were quite elusive but we were treated to some bubbles and fluke prints, signs of some feeding activity, also marked by some excited birds circling above the surface. We continued on, and were treated to a pod of 9-10 white-beaked dolphins. So much activity for such a calm and quiet day! As we headed back, we had a surprise visit from 3 more minke whales right by the entrance to the harbour! Northern gannets circling above and plunge diving, seagulls screaming in all directions, we even got to see a lunge from the whales, a feeding frenzy! Such a wonderful surprise to come back to after a challenging and rewarding tour.
