Whale Diary

10:00 - Today's weather was rainy and overcast, with a bit of wind, but that didn't dampen our enthusiasm as we set out on our whale watching adventure. Our first stop was Akurey, where we enjoyed watching some puffins before heading further out to search for whales. A few minutes into our journey, we encountered a pod of 3 white-beaked dolphins. Although they weren't very interested in us and disappeared after a couple of sightings, it was still thrilling to see them. In the same area, we spotted 3 minke whales. These whales were surfacing quite regularly, and one of them even surfaced very close to our RIB, giving us an incredible close-up view. Shortly after, we were lucky enough to see 2 harbor porpoises surface a couple of times. Their brief appearance added to the excitement of the tour. As the tour was coming to an end, we were given a wonderful surprise. A Humpback Whale surfaced right next to our RIB, creating an unforgettable moment and the perfect end to our whale watching experience.

12:00 - We sailed out into the rain and headed to the same area we were in this morning. When we arrived, we found a small pod of 5 white-beaked dolphins that swam near the boat for a while but then left. We then headed to another area where we saw a Humpback Whale! We only saw it one time before it went for a dive but then we saw more dolphins doing huge jumps in the distance! We went over to see them and they were so curious of the boat, bow riding and surfing in the waves. After these amazing dolphins we had to head back into the harbour and on our way in we spotted a Minke Whale too. The whale surfaced near the boat a few times before disappearing beneath the sea.

14:00 - We had high hopes for this trip and it didn't dissappoint. After a quick visit to the puffins on Akurey, we moved on to where we had spotted cetaceans earlier in the day. We first came accross a small group of white beaked dolphins, around 5 of them. They were active but fast, so after some time with them we moved on and we saw 2 minke whales during the sail. One of them was particularly good, showing itself very clearly when it came to the surface. We spent the rest of the time with a second, large group of white beaked dolphins, around 15 of them, that were very active, jumping and rolling. It was a wonderful sight and everybody was delighted. We also saw 2 harbour porpoises, towards the end of the tour.

16:00 - The rain was pretty constant for this tour too but that didn't stop us going out in search of some wildlife. We soon found a small pod of 4 white-beaked dolphins. They were calmly moving at the surface but weren't very interested in socialising with us. When they moved away from our boat, we also moved on to find other animals. It didn't take us long to find an area with around 5 minke whales. It was great to see so many in one area. Some of them surfaced very close to the boat, and others further away. The whole time we were watching the whales, there were also lots of gannets diving around us. There was obviously a lot of fish under the water! We then moved on and found another pod of 6-8 dolphins. These individuals were a lot more curious of us and came really close under the boat, even showing us their white bellies!

20:00 - We set off and first we stopped for a quick visit to our puffin friends at Akurey island. The passengers took photos of the birds as they circled around the island, and next we drove deep into the bay to the locations where we found cetaceans ealier in the day. We spotted several groups of white beaked dolphins, making a total count of around 30 of them. They were absolutely joyful, jumping, breaching, rolling, flapping, and coming right next to the boat, and under it, and riding our wake. The passengers were ecstatic, and in the middle of the action, we saw 2 minke whales, one of them coming really close, and giving full views of its body as it was sliding through the surface.
