Whale Diary

10:00 -  A wonderful tour. We dressed up and quickly went to our boat. We started with a stop to the biggest puffin colony in Reykjavik the Akurey island. Thousands of them flying around with there beaks full of fish to bring them to there baby pufflings. After our nice stop we went straight towards the open waters to search for something bigger. Not long after we spotted our first white beaked dolphins. More than five of them playing and jumping Infront of our boat filling us with excitement for the day ahead. Not far away we spotted our fist blow !!! A beautiful humpback whale together with a pot of 7 white beaked dolphins cruising and feeding together. Such an amazing show. On our way back we spotted 2 more minke whales and one more humpback whale that made our tour even better.

12:00 -  We headed out this morning under a bright sky, the sea smooth and shimmering with only the faintest breeze — ideal conditions for spotting wildlife. Our first stop of the day was Akurey, where the puffins are nesting. After soaking up the sights and sounds of the island, we pushed farther out in search of whales. It wasn’t long before our first encounter: a lively pod of white-beaked dolphins, and to our delight, they had many newborn calves with them! The tiny ones darted alongside their mothers, learning to ride the wake, their dark little shapes glinting just under the surface. We made a quick but respectful stop to watch, giving them plenty of space to move freely. Not much later came the real star of the day — a humpback whale! We found it lunge-feeding, bursting up through schools of fish with its enormous mouth wide open. Again and again it surfaced with power and grace, sending sprays of water into the air and thrilling everyone on board. What a show! As we began the journey back, we were treated to one final surprise: a group of five minke whales, all busy feeding at the surface. A couple even lunged clear out of the water in a burst of energy, slicing through the calm sea with ease.

14:00 -  We set sail on the calm bay with a bit of fog rolling in slowly. We quickly spotted a pod of 5-7 very curious, very playful white-beaked dolphins. They were darting in and out of the water all around, surfacing right by us for some close-up looks, and even bow-riding for a couple of minutes! After this wonderful encounter, we continued on, and soon came across the blow of a humpback whale. We even got to see a bit of a lunge near the surface, and were treated to quite a few spectacular fluke dives. As we were admiring the humpback, some sneaky minke whales also made brief appearances in the background, brightening out tour. We stayed with the busy, diving humpback as long as we could, before heading back towards port, stopping at the wonderful Atlantic puffin colony on Akurey.

16:00 -  We set out on today’s adventure with a stop at Akurey — the cliffs alive with puffins, coming and going.  After soaking in the seabird spectacle, we headed out in search of whales. Before long, we spotted the telltale roll of an elusive minke whale — a quick, sleek back breaking the surface before disappearing again, as minkes so often do. But just as we were watching that, someone spotted a humpback whale in the same area! We made our way over and were treated to several beautiful surfaces from the humpback — that massive back and dorsal fin sliding through the waves, with a few lingering spouts hanging in the air. As if the show couldn’t get better, a group of white-beaked dolphins suddenly joined the party, darting around and flashing their pale sides, adding a whole new energy to the scene. Eventually we moved on to explore further. In another area, we glimpsed another minke whale briefly — just a shy roll before it vanished. But then came the grand finale: a pod of white-beaked dolphins, wildly playful, leaping high into the air, twisting, splashing, and even riding along at the bow of our boat! It was pure joy watching them race alongside us, so full of life and spirit.
