Whale Diary

11:00 - We set off on this lovely sunny day, we headed towards Hvalfjodur and found a humpback whale very fast! This was an individual known as Mr Bubbles, it was moving around quite a bit but going for some big fluke dives. Whilst with Mr Bubbles we saw a minke whale too. This was also a really nice minke with it surfacing a few times really close to us. We then headed out into the middle of the bay where we saw many birds. Then out of nowhere, very close on the right of þruma I we saw a humpback whale breach! This was followed quickly by another 2 breaches! We then realised this was actually a pair of humpback whales. þruma IV then arrived as well to watch the pair of humpbacks. They were now really calm surfacing very close to us. We could see their whole bodies through the water, including their massive white pectoral fins. We then headed home after this amazing morning.

14:00 - In the afternoon, the sun continued to stick with us, so we had an amazing blue sky during the whole day! A few minutes after we left the harbour, we spotted about first blow next to Akurey, one of the islands close to Reykjavík. We came a bit closer and we had a humpback whale next to us! What fun! This one was quite close and we could take a good look on its fluke when it went down. Due to the amount of boats, we decided to continue the trip to check other parts of Faxaflói bay. Watching the many Northern gannets diving in one area, we went to take a look. There, we found a minke whale! This one was very calm, and we had a closer encounter when it popped up next to us. We also saw a blow not far from us and it belonged to another humpback whale, that was going for longer dives and breaking its own records when holding its breath. After a few minutes waiting, we saw it on the surface again while it went for another deep dive and started our way home. A beautiful sunny day at sea with time well spent!
