Whale Diary

10:00 - This morning started off a little chilly and overcast, but with hardly any wind or swell, we were ready for an adventure! Not long after setting out, we spotted our first whale—a minke whale! But this one must've been playing hard to get, only giving us a quick peek before vanishing into the deep. Just as we were starting to wonder if it would be a quiet trip, we hit the jackpot—a humpback whale! This beauty wasn’t in a hurry, taking 3-4 minute dives, but when it surfaced, it made a real statement. At one point, it came so close to the boat that you could almost hear everyone’s heart skip a beat. That close encounter had everyone buzzing with excitement, and despite the overcast skies, the energy on board was through the roof!

13:00 - This afternoon we headed back to the same area as the morning on even calmer seas. We were then rewarded very quickly as we found Davy Jones the the humpback. They were  resting for most of the sighting, logging at the surface. We did see them spy hop twice too which was really cool. We then headed off and got to see 5-7 minke whales. They were all coming up very randomly probably whilst feeding. Some did come really close to us a few times which was really nice. We then headed back after an amazing tour.

16:00 - What a day! The weather cleared up perfectly—no wind, no swell, just smooth sailing ahead. Not long after we set out, we hit the minke whale jackpot—3 or 4 of them popping up! One of them must’ve been feeling extra social, coming super close to the boat and even blowing a few bubbles right next to us! But then, things really kicked off—we spotted a humpback whale breaching in the distance, not once, not twice, but three times in a row! As we got closer, we realized it was the legendary Davy Jones. He wasn’t done showing off, either—he kept diving and resurfacing, getting closer and closer to the boat, and everyone was loving it. Just when we thought the excitement was over, as we cruised back to the harbor, 3 cheeky harbor porpoises made a surprise appearance to say goodbye. Talk about a whale of a day!
