Whale Diary

11:00 - This morning we bundled up and headed out with sunny skies and a cold wind. After an adventurous journey out into the bay we spotted a flock of seabirds and decided to see if any cetaceans were in that area. We searched high and low and this perseverance paid off when we spotted the blows of not one, but two humpback whales! In between the waves we admired this pair as they swam along in front of us. The cold weather allowed for us to clearly see the blows of this pair as they surfaced. We even got to see the fluke not once but twice! As we had some larger waves this morning, we also were able to see the whole body of one of the whales through the water as it came up to the surface at the crest of the wave. We saw its entire body with its bright white pectoral fins too! After multiple surface sequences, it was time to bundle back up and head back towards port. By our islands, we then spotted the blow of one minke whale. This individual surfaced very frequency and circled all around us. They showed how quickly they can move about. After a great viewing with our minke, unfortunately it was time to wave our whales goodbye and head back to land. What a thrilling way to start the day!
