Whale Diary

10:00 - This morning, we were expecting beautiful sunshine again but as we left the harbour we sailed right into another thick fog. It seemed to cover the entire bay, making it trcky for us to spot the whales. We decided to head towards Hvalfjörður and we were lucky we did! Not too long after arriving at the mouth of the fjord, we found a humpback whale! This whale was lunge feeding very actively at the surface. Most of the front half of its body was coming up out of the water! Amazing to watch! As a few other boats arrived, the whale calmed down and started swimming normally. We were treated to a few fluke dives through the fog too. After a while, we decided to leave this whale in peace, and sailed to new areas to search for other animals. Unfortunately, we didn't find anything else but we did make our stop for the puffins at one of the islands on our way back into the harbour. A very atmopsheric morning at sea!

14:00 - We went out with less fog than in the morning and the sun was trying to push it's way through it. Our destination was the Hvalfjörður, since there was a Humpback Whale in the morning. The Humpback was still there and also the sun made it's way back out and gave us a nice warm up. We watched it surface a few times and showing us it's beautiful fluke. Suddenly 4 Harbor Porpoises appeared, but only for a few breaths, then they disappeared again as fast as the appeared. After seeing the Humpback a few more times, we went to another spot in the Hvalfjörður and found a second Humpback Whale. This one took longer dives, but he let us see his fluke as well, before we had to leave. It was a very nice tour. :)
