Whale Diary

10:00 - Today's weather was a pleasant change with relatively sunny skies and light wind, perfect for a whale watching adventure. Shortly after we sailed out of the harbor, we spotted some splashes in the distance. Upon closer inspection, we found a pod of 10-15 white-beaked dolphins. They were very active and playful, even approaching our boat several times, providing us with an exciting start to our tour.Continuing on, we glimpsed a Minke Whale from a distance. This whale was quite shy, and after a couple of brief sightings, it disappeared from view. We moved on and soon encountered another pod of 5-7 white-beaked dolphins. Like the first group, these dolphins were lively and engaging, putting on quite a show for us.While we were absorbed in watching these dolphins, we were taken by surprise when a Humpback Whale suddenly appeared and performed a stunning fluke dive very close to our RIB. It was a breathtaking moment, marking the highlight of our trip.The combination of playful dolphins and the unexpected appearance of a Humpback Whale made today's tour an unforgettable experience.

12:00 - The seas were calm once we got out into the bay, which made for great conditions for our tour. Not too long into the journey, we found a small pod of 3 white-beaked dolphins. These dolphins were not particularly social with us but as we were waiting for them to surface, we also saw a pod of 4 harbour porpoises! We were able to see the porpoises a few times before they disappeared under the waves. We moved on as we had seen more dolphins in the distance and soon realised there were around 30 dolphins spread out in the area in smaller groups. Some of them were very energetic, doing huge jumps out of the water! A few of the dolphins came right up to the boat and were bow riding too! While we were watching the dolphins we were seeing many minke whales as well. Most of them were far away but a few surfaced close to the boat. We must have seen at least 10 individuals! We then decided to move on to look in a different area when a Humpback Whale suddenly appeared right in front of us! We tried to wait for it to surface again but we ran out of time and were just lucky to see it the once!

14:00 - This afternoon, the weather turned more overcast than in the morning, and the wind had picked up a bit. Despite the changing conditions, everyone was still excited to head out and look for whales. A few minutes into our journey, we encountered a pod of about 6-8 white-beaked dolphins. They were very active and playful, delighting us with their jumps and bow riding alongside our boat. After a few minutes with these energetic dolphins, we sailed on in search of more marine life. Our patience paid off when we found 4 minke whales. These whales were surfacing quite often, and a few times they came very close to our RIB, giving us an incredible close-up view. It was incredible to observe their movements so near to our boat. As the tour came to an end, we began our return to the harbor. On the way back, we made a stop by Engey, where we had the chance to see some puffins. It was a perfect way to conclude our exciting whale watching adventure.

16:00 - The afternoon was looking good and we were not disappointed on this tour! A short while after leaving port we spotted the first group of white beaked dolphins, around 20 of them, jumping all over the place, and 2 minke whales in the same place. After a little bit we spotted a Humpback Whale, and it was very active, flapping its fluke at the surface and rolling on its sides several times. Coming back we spotted another pod of around 15 dolphins also showing a lot of activity. Northern gannets could be seen all over the place diving into the sea at incredible seas for their fish. It was wonderful.

20:00 - The last tour of the day did not dissappoint either. We found a group of 20 white beaked dolphins very quickly, but soon after we saw that there were at least two more pods in the vicinity, bringing the total count to over 40 dolphins jumping all over the place and delighting everyone. We saw at least 5 minke whales swimming in the same place, and also a minimum of 3 humpback whales. They were active too, coming really close. The passengers were beaming with delight, and the evening light gave a grand finish to the end of the tour.
