Whale Diary

10:00 - We had a very successful tour this morning. We didn't have to sail far from the marina until we found the first Humpback Whale! This one was an incredibly active individual, lunge feeding repeteadly, and rolling and showing its tail. The weather was amazing so the whole scene was lovely. A Minke Whale joined the action and the tour was perfect! After a bit we left these whales alone and we drove on for a while and we soon after found the second humpback of the trip, bringing the count to 2.

12:00 -  We set off again to start the afternoon by heading south. The sun was starting to come out and there still wasn't too much wind which was nice. Not too long into the journey a Humpback Whale dived just in front of us. So we waited a few minutes before this majestic animal came back up. Soon we realised we were actually watching not 1 but 2 humpbacks. They are called Hooker and Happy. At one point they surfaced together, it is likely they were feeding. They then separated and we watched Hooker for a while coming up a lot and going for many fluke dives. After a while they came back together and started to lunge feeding and blow bubbles to aid their feeding. As we started to head home a 3rd humpback surfaced really close at our front so we watched it go for a fluke dive too. We now headed towards Akurey to watch the cute puffins after a great start to the afternoon.

14:00 -  Today‘s weather took a turn with increasing wind, overcast skies, and rough seas. Despite the challenging conditions, our excitement remained high as we set sail from the harbor. Shortly after departing, we were thrilled to spot two humpback whales in the distance. One of them was pec slapping, creating a spectacular display of splashes. As we approached, we were amazed to witness one of the whales breach! The sight of such a massive creature leaping out of the water was truly awe-inspiring. We stayed with these two magnificent whales for a while, enjoying their powerful and graceful movements. Eventually, it was time to move on and head back to the harbor. Although the sea was a bit rough, the incredible whale sightings made today's tour an unforgettable adventure. We look forward to our next outing, hoping for more incredible encounters with these majestic creatures.
