Whale Diary

11:00 - The sun shone bright this morning and the seas conditions were about as good as they can be. We searched around for some time and found a pod of around 5 white-beaked dolphins This pod was incredibly calm and we could stay with it for some time, surfacing often close to us and they even swam by right under us! A minke whale passed by as we watched the dolphins and this one really started the trend as we saw no less than 4 minkes in total during our tour! one even got so close that we could see its whole body through the water surface, highlighting the bright white path on its pectoral fins. After a quick stop at Akurey, which was already booming with puffins, we sailed back into port. What an incredible morning tour this was!

14:00 - This afternoon, we decided to explore some new areas and sailed further north. It was a good plan because we discovered a humpback whale. This whale was fairly easy to follow as it was swimming in the same direction and only doing dives of ~5 minutes. When it was at the surface it gave us beeeaautiful fluke dives and even surfaced right next to one of our boats! An incredible encounter! Word travels fast in the bay, and soon many other whale watching boats were approaching the area so we decided to move on from the whale to not overcrowd it. On our way back in to the harbour, we stopped at Akurey to see the puffins that are starting their next breeding season - there are already so many!
