Whale Diary

10:00 - With sunny skies, we applied our sunscreen and headed out into the bay. It was not too long before we found a pod of 4 white-beaked dolphins. They were very curious and swam under and around our boat multiple times! It is always so exciting when our dolphins are as interested in us as we are in them. They were then playing in the waves and it was great to see their entire bodies through the water. After multiple surface sequences, we continued on to see who else was around. Shortly after we spotted the blow of one humpback whale! This individual surfaced very close to our boat, giving us a bit of a boat inspection as well! We could even track their movements by following their white pectoral fins through the water. We had a very focused feeder and between surfaces, we were able to watch some Northern gannets plunge diving in the area. After multiple surface sequences with our humpback whale and a fabulous fluke dive, we waved this humpback goodbye and headed back to port. What a successful morning!

12:00 - We quickly got dressed and went fast to our boat to enjoy this beautiful sunny day. We sailed out from Reykjavik port with direction towards the open waters. We spotted a blow and went fast to investigate. It was a humpback whales that was calmly cruising in this area. A quite big individual that stayed with us for a while showing us its fluke multiple times. After this amazing sighting we continued our search and not long after we came across a pot of 6 harbour porpoises that where really playful and came really close to our boat  and made our tour even better.

14:00 - With a bit of a chill, we bundled up and headed out into the bay. It was not too long until we spotted the blow of one humpback whale. This individual was a very focused feeder and after a few surface sequences, we waved this individual goodbye. As we continued farther out into the bay we spotted two more blows and decided to investigate. Upon further inspection, we had come across a pair of humpback whales! These individuals provided us with excellent views as they decided to give us a bit of a boat inspection. It was so clear we could easily track them through the surface of the water. After a beautiful treat of a double fluke dive; we noticed some splashes in the distance and went to check that location out. We had come back to our original humpback whale, but this time they were very active. We had some tail slapping and even some pectoral slapping as well! It is so wonderful when you get to see the entire pectoral fins out of the water. This individual even started rolling and tail slapping on their back. After such an amazing show, we counted ourselves lucky and headed back to port. What an excellent tour!

15:00 - Such an amazing tour. We sailed out under calm seas and clear skies with direction towards the open waters. At the begging of our tour we came across a pot of 6 harbour porpoises that were exceptionally playful and curious of our existence. After this nice interaction we continued our search for something bigger. It dint took a long until we spotted some blows. Indeed was not one but 2 humpback whales that were cruising together. We stayed with them for quite a while until we show some splashes close by. It was a humpback whale that was not was breaching rolling tail slapping without any shine of exhaustion. We stayed with it for at least 30 minutes enjoying the show until the time was up and we started our way towards the port.
