Whale Diary

09:00 - This morning we sailed out and met some big swell, the sun was rising and started creeping around the clouds. We sailed for a bit periodically stopping to enjoy the surroundings but also to take a closer look and make sure we hadn't missed anything on the sail. Then a blow! This belonged to a humpback whale! This whale came incredibly close and we managed to see it a few times as it was not diving very long. Each time it went down, it showed us its gorgeous fluke! We then continued sailing and eventually headed back to the harbour.

12:00 - Filled and fueled by lunch we set sail into Faxafloi. The wind had dropped from the morning though there was still some swell. Only 30min into the tour we already spotted our first blow! And then 2 more! This was three humpback whales travelling together! Each time they went down they showed the fluke and we were spoilt for choice! They seemed to be feeding and were very synchronised. There were moments where we thought the trio might be dissolving but they always reunited, sometimes one of them would just come up first. We enjoyed for a bit but not wanting to overstay our welcome eventually made a move. We ended up finding 2 minke whales and one more humpback! The minkes came up a few times, keeping us on our toes to where they would come up next. One surface was quite close to the boat! The fourth humpback was a little bit shy so we only saw it on the way back briefly.

15:00 - This afternoon was truly an adventure, we left the harbour and went straight to our lucky spot from the previous tours and quickly saw a blow! This was two humpback whales! They both went for a fluke dive and while we waited for them to come back up, another blow on our left - humpback whale number 3! As it wasn't far we went an had a look at this one too. Then these 3 started being a little less predictable, so it was a bit harder to track. We saw the duo a few more times and the solitary one came extremely close to us and it looked like they were swimming towards each other. We waited in this spot but it seemed these 3 had different ideas so we decided to continue on a bit. Not long after we spotted another blow, and lo and behold another humpback whale! While we were waiting, a huge hail cloud found us and we were hailed on and then at the same time a rainbow appeared! The humpback was then coming up underneath the rainbow which was quite magical. We watched on as long as time would allow and eventually sailed back to harbour, rainbows and sunset guiding us home.
