Whale Diary

10:00 - On this sunny morning, we ventured into Faxaflói bay looking for amazing wildlife experiences. We first passed by Akurey island to see the puffin colony there, as well as the various other marine bird species who live in this tiny island. But soon after that, we set coarse to deeper waters. The sea there was a bit wavy, causing our RIB boat to bounce a bit, but nothing that bothered our passengers. Our search soon paid out with a sighting of a large humpback whale. We spent some time with this giant, watching it perform blows and fluke dives (where the tail brings its gorgeous tail out of the water). We then left this whale and sailed across the bay, observing various bird species, like skuas, kittiwake, artic terns and fulmars, before heading back to Reykjavík.

14:00 - The sun was still bright as ever but the waves had picked up a bit more since the morning which meant we had an exciting ride out into the bay! Before that though, we made a quick stop by Akurey, witnessing the many puffins around! After that we continued our search in hopes of finding whales! Eventually, we stumbled upon a sleepy humpback whale. It came up slowly many times in its slumber allowing us many closeup looks at this giant. Eventually we gave it back its peace and went onwards, travelling back in bay full of seabirds!

20:00 - The skies were still clear as ever and a shifted wind meant the seas got a bit calmer as well, leaving jusyt enough waves for an adventurous trip. We first made our obligatory stop to pay respects to the puffins of Akurey and with their blessing we went onwards in search of whales. We searched around for the bit while the sun got lower and the skies got orange and pink. Lots of seabirds indicated a presence of a lot of fish and so we knew it was only a matter of time before we´d find a whale. And so we eventually did, encountering a beautiful and active humpback whale, which took us all over as it was in search of food. First their dives were shallow, but eventually we got treated to fluke dive after fluke dive! This meant at the end of the evening we were left with an encounter to remember!
