Whale Diary

10:00 - This morning we had incredible weather yet again! The sun was shining and the waves were non existent. Our boats went in different directions this morning, one went into the bay whilst the other headed to Hvalfjöður. Within the fjord our boat got very lucky and saw 3 species: a humpback whale, some minke whales and lots of harbour porpoises. The story was fairly similar for the other boat in the bay as they saw firstly a very interactive minke who kept swimming right under the boat giving everyone an amazing look at it´s full body. This was one of our best minke sightings ever. Further in a pod of 10 white beaked dolphins came for a ride and stayed very close as well. Later on they saw a small pod of porpoises and 3-4 more minke whales. Both boats also stopped to look at many Atlantic puffins as well!

14:00 - The sun was still shining this afternoon and the sea was beautifully calm. We made a a quick stop at Engey to see some puffins settling in for the breeding season and then sailed on our into the bay in search of cetaceans. After a little searching, we spotted a large pod of 10-15 white-beaked dolphins. They were easy to follow and sometimes came very close to the boat! Some of them swam right next to us and we could see their whole bodies through the water! Incredible! After spending some time with this pod, we decided to leave them and look in some other areas. It didn't take us long to find a minke whale! This individual was much more calm and curious than a lot of minkes we see. We were able to easily track it around the boat and it came up close next to us a couple of times too. The minke stayed in the area around the boat for quite a while, so we had many opportunities to see it! After this, we were unfortunately running out of time and had to sail back to Reykjavik - a wonderful afternoon on the water!
