Whale Diary

10:00 - This morning, the skies were grey but the seas were good for whale watching. We headed out and not too long into our search, we found a Humpback Whale! When we saw it it was going for a fluke dive so we waited for it to surface again. We watched the humpback a few times but a lot of other boats joined us so we decided to move on to reduce stress on the whale. We moved to a new area and found a huge pod of dolphins! There were at least 40 white-beaked dolphins spread over a large area and they were all very energetic! No matter the direction we looked, we saw dolphins surfacing close to the boat and jumping! We enjoyed these dolphins and then headed back to the humpback as some boats had left. When we arrived, we saw that another individual had joined the first so there were now 2 humpbacks feeding in the same area! Some of the dolphins had also moved over to the humpbacks and were harrassing them at the surface. Soon though, our time in the bay started to run out so as the humpbacks did one last fluke dive we turned back and headed in to the harbour.

12:00 - This afternoon we sailed out, the was as smooth as glass and conditions were perfect for us. After a quick sail we spotted a Minke Whale, this one stayed elusive but we spotted another one a little further too. After trying to spot it again we decided to head on. We quickly spotted a few blows on the horizon - Twas a Humpback Whale! And then another one! They came up a few times quite shyly before coming up super close to our boat. We saw them fluke and then heard a rumour of dolphins near by. We headed on and spotted a big pod of 30 white beaked dolphins. They were all around us, you could look in any direction and spot dolphins! Just as we decided to head home, we spotted another blow and went over to go investigate. This was another Humpback Whale that was lunge feeding incredily close to us, essentially going in circels around the boat. We turned off our engines and just enjoyed this magnificent creature only a few meters away from us. We actually ran out of time and came back late because it was such a special interaction!

14:00 - The weather was good, grey skies but nice sea. It took us a little bit until we found the first whales, but boy there were a lot of them! 15 Minke Whales feeding all around us. Peaking out the water all around us. After a while we wanted to see if we could find the Humpbacks and we did! There were 4 Humpbacks around, but only 2 that were close by to enjoy their beauty. Also their were about 50 White Beaked Dolphins around, jumping, spyhopping and racing around us, playing with the Humpbacks. The Humpbacks on the other hand just wanted to feed, so they did. Lots of Lungefeeding, lots of birds! Unfortunately we had to go back again, so we left them alone to enjoy their lunch.

16:00 - The weather was a little rainy, the clouds very dark, but the sea on the other hand was quit calm in the beginning. We headed out to the spot we just left the tour before, hoping that the feeding was still on - and it was!! 4 Humpback Whales were surrounding us, leaving us unsure where to look first. About 5 Minke Whales were only visible in the distance. The 50 White Beaked Dolphins were on fire! They were jumping and wouldn't stop to amaze us, by showing off everything they got. It was amzing, so much going on and we could watch it all for such a long time! Unfortunately also this tour had to end at one point, so we left and went back to the harbor.

20:00 - We had high hopes for this evening tour and we were not dissappointed!! Shortly after we left the harbour we encountered the first group of white beaked dolphins, around 10 of them. They were active, jumping, and moving fast. We stayed some time with them, and we also caught sight of a minke while in the same area. After a while with these cetaceans we pushed on to widen our sighting area, and eventually we found a larger group of dolphins, around 15 of them, behaving even more actively, jumping all over the place. As we were admiring such interesting and fun behaviour we saw a Humpback Whale join the action, and everybody was pleased. A bit later we saw another Minke Whale cruising in the distance, bringing the count to 2, and as we were driving back, we saw a second Humpback Whale that had been spotted earlier by one of our other boats. It was a magical evening.
