Whale Diary

11:00 - There was sunshine and almost no wind today, so we had a perfect day for whale-watching! There were lots of animals in Faxaflói: two separate minke whales, a fast pod of harbour porpoises, lots and lots of white-beaked dolphins and a humpback whale. The minke whales were a little bit elusive, but came up often enough to give us a good look at them. The porpoises came up frequently, and with the beautiful sunlight it was easy to see them. The white-beaked dolphins were literally everywhere - even when we tried to leave them, they would somehow show up again. Finally, we got news that a humpback whale had been sighted close to Akurey, so we had a wonderful last sighting with this gorgeous animal.

14:00 - There was a bit more wind in the bay this afternoon, but with a wonderful sunshine it was still great to go out. We first stopped at the humpback whale that was coming up frequently close to Akurey. He often lifted his fluke above the water, and with the unique pattern underneath it we were able to identify this humpback as Mr. Bubbles. Next, we ventured further out and found a pod of 4 or 5 white-beaked dolphins. Before we knew it, it was time to head back to the harbour, on the way enjoyed the sunshine, wind in our backs, and lots of seabirds flying around.
