Whale Diary

14:00 - We headed out on our first tour of the day since the weather had other plans for the previous tours, and we were happy to be greeted with fairly good conditions. We drove for a long time before we saw any action, but then we noticed a big blow! It was a humpback whale! It started off by doing short surface intervals and quickly showed its fluke, but all of a sudden it did a full breach close to our boat! Everyone got so excited and started screaming. We definitely did not expect this at all and it was absolutely magical. We stayed by this individual for a while after this event since it seemed to become more active. After this breach it was really easy to follow this individual. It stayed by the surface longer and we got really nice close looks of it. It also displayed its gorgeous fluke many times. During this encounter we had rougly 5 minke whales passing by now and then. We also had the pleasure of seeing jumping white beaked dolphins far away in the distance. This tour was lovely!

15:00 - On this tour we had moderate waves, a bit of wind and a partially cloudy sky. Not too far out, we spotted 3 harbour porpoises travelling about. We got to see our tiny friends come up a few times before we eventually set off again, in search of more wildlife. second on our list was a humpback whale, which travelling at a decent speed, coming up several times before diving, showing off its mighty fluke. after that, we found ourselves in a large area with about 8 minke whales  all around, They seemed to be quite busy feeding and didn't mind us being around so we enjoyed the company of these whales quite a bit, travelling from one to another. 2 of them were also particularly small, which clearly indicated that they still very young individuals. Eventually, our afternoon had to come to an end and so we sailed back to Reykjavik, content with this afternoon´s sightings.
