Whale Diary

11:00 - We started off by sailing out in the bay and the morning greeting us with a cold breeze and a bit of sun. We went far out, until we spotted a flock of birds with a couple of dorsal fins amongst them! There were about 15 white-beaked dolphins and for our surprise, they stopped feeding in that spot and came straight to us, curious about our boat!! Many times we could just see them right on our sides, going under us and popping up at the same time. They were circling us and even when we started moving, they decided to follow, bow riding! Very interestingly, 2 of them were making some movements on the surface, sometimes touching each other and even staying both with their belly up. We then left these dolphins and explored many areas, to them find out 2 minke whales right next to the harbour!! One of them was very close to us, and popped up on our side and them very close to the front. With this, we said goodbye to a great tour!

14:00 - On our afternoon tour, we decided to check the  harbour area first, expecting to the one of the sightings of the last trip and bingo! There were still 2 minke whales there. We decided to keep up with one, as we had many good sightings of this one, sometimes coming very close. We could even track it because of the many fluke prints that would appear on the surface, before this one popped up meters ahead. Great to see them, but now it was time to go into the bay of Faxaflói! We explored many areas, also getting close to many flocks of birds to see if there was some action next to them. We also went to Viðey island, since there were sightings in this area recently. However, we ended up not seeing anything else and we started our way home. Still, a beautiful encounter with that minke whale on the beginning!
