Whale Diary

10:00 - We had very strange weather this morning - heavy fog over Reykjavik and around the coast. Heading out of the harbour, we couldn't see very far in front if our boats! We stopped at Engey and found quite a few puffins in the water by the island. We then headed further out and luckily the fog started to lift a little and we had much better visibility. We then heard from the other whale watching boats that there was a lot of life in Hvalfjörður again today. On our way there, we spotted a pod of 3 harbour porpoises. They were swimming around amongst a group of birds so probably feeding under the water. We moved on a little and then found a pod of 5-6 white-beaked dolphins. In the group were two very small calves so the pod were being a little cautious of the boat and not coming too close as they were being protective of the young ones. We were still able to get a good look at these adorable babies before we decided to leave them in peace. As we arrived at the entrance to the fjord, we found another pod of 5 white-beaked dolphins. They were a bit more curious around one of the other whale watching boats but we soon noticed that they also had a calf in the group, and soon they started behaving like the previous pod. We then moved a little further into the fjord and found a humpback whale! This individual was fairly close to land and was doing consistent fluke dives. Seeing the tail shining in the sun as it burned off the fog was amazing! We unfortunately then had to head back in to the harbour, but just as we were leaving the area, we found another humpback! However, we could only see this individual once. We waited as long as we could to try and see it again but unfortunately, we had to keep heading back. A beautiful morning though, and definitely more interesting weather conditions than we usually have with the thick fog!

14:00 - This afternoon we sailed out back into the fog. We didn't know what the tour would hold and how the fog would act. We stopped at Engey to look at some puffins which were all around the water and on land which was still looking earlier and foggy. We then continued the sail and came out the other side of the fog straight into the sun! We sailed around  little to see what we could find and then headed to the whale fjord where we found a humpback whale! This whale was very friendly and came close to our boat! The captain even commented on how close it came! The other big boats started leaving and we were able to enjoy it just ourselves. The sun had come out in full swings and it truly felt like summer. We tried to stay as long as we could but eventually ran out of time and had to head back. On the way back we spotted another humpback doing one last fluke dive for us!
