Whale Diary

10:00 - With a slight rain over us, we felt that this start of the day would be for the best. Quite quickly we spotted a lot of birdlife and knew activity was coming. We managed to see 2 humpback whales consecutively, both on a feeding frenzy and fluke diving to get as much fish as possible. As we headed back, we encountered 2 minke whales, feeding in the same zone, that kept roaming around very close to us, in a very un-minke fashion, finishing off this tour on only high notes.

12:00 - The skies were gray today as we headed out into the bay, but after the last few days of great sightings we were all very optimistic for today. After stopping at Akurey to see some of the adorable breeding puffins, we headed further out into the bay and soon found a single harbor porpoise. As usual, the porpoise wasn't too sociable so after seeing it for a couple of times, it disappeared beneath the waves. We carried on further out, and spotted the back of a minke whale! Though normally elusive, this minke gave us quite the show with multiple close surfaces and seeing that wonderful minke smile!! We were even treated to some ´stinky minke´ breath! We kept on moving and shortly found a pod of 5 white beaked dolphins! They even had a curious calf that came to say hello! As we waved goodbye to our dolphins we saw another pod of 4 white beaked dolphins that decided we were not too interesting so we went forth again. We then had another great view of a different minke whale! After a few surface sequences we then spotted a blow up again! We found our fourth species one humpback whale! We got to see that classic humpback whale fluke dive and multiple powerful blows before waving goodbye back to port. But the humpbacks were not done with us as on the way we spotted another one humpback whale!! Another treat to that classic fluke dive and homeward we sailed. What a great tour!

14:00 - Sailing out again this afternoon, the rain had stopped and we were confident of the sightings we could have, given our good experiences this morning. Very quickly, we got to spot a humpback whale, that fluke dived multiple times with us, for all to enjoy to the best. Later on, we headed further West to spot some new species, much to our liking, as we saw 2 minke whales, incredibly close to our boats.

16:00 - Going out into the bay we were all layered up and ready to venture out into the intermitted rain showers. Our first stop was at one humpback whale! As we came to them they started with some wonderful pectoral slaps! It was so nice to see those fins up close and out of the water. This humpback was pretty playful as it treated us with some rolls and we saw its fluke come out of the water when it was upside down! It even decided to check us out nice and close and we were able to smell its fishy breath! We then decided to see who else was around and came across a pod of 4 white beaked dolphins. While we were looking at the dolphins we suspected a minke whale in the area for we smelled some really 'stinky minke' breath, but, in typical minke fashion, they did not want to say hello. So onward we went and then spotted another blow from one humpback whale! This humpback was showing off that fluke and we got to see it twice before we headed back to check out our puffin population. After admiring the puffins we came back to the harbor, what a successful tour!

20:00 - This evening we sailed onto our beautiful bay with the sunset ahead of us. We found a very hungry humpback whale that was having its dinner. We saw it lunge feeding a couple of times, and every time it went for a deeper dive it showed us its beautiful fluke. After spending some time with it, we continued our search of more whales. It didn't take us very long until we found our second humpback. This was one was more relaxed and stayed on the surface for a while before going for deeper dives, showing its fluke every time it did so. We started our way back and we found something we didn't expect, a pod of 6 white-beaked dolphins. After enjoying the view of the dolphins with their babies, we finally went back home.
