Whale Diary

10:00 - The sky was quite gray today but we were still excited to see whales. We did not have to go far because we did find a humpback whale quite close to land. This one came very close to our boat. It disappeared for quite some time and we did not know where it was, but then it startled us and did loud exhales right next to us. I do not think we could have gotten any closer than we did today. It even did a tail throw and showed off. Eventually it went on its side and started to do pec slaps with very loud noises. It was incredible to see. We searched the area for anything else but unfortunately without luck. I think we set the bar quite high from the beginning of the tour. It was an amazing time out at sea.

12:00 - The sea was a bit choppy and while the tour started of very cloudy, the so managed to break through eventually, revealing us some blue skies! All our cetacean wildlife was quite close by this time so we did not have to travel all that far before we found our first whale! This whale was a minke whale, which surfaced a few times around us before disappearing. No matter though, because right next to us was also a humpback whale! This individual, heavily scarred from an orca encounter, was coming up a couple times before going on moderately long dives. Eventually we left him to it and found a second humpback! This whale was quite erratic as it went from feeding, to travelling and throwing even some peduncle throws in the mix! ONce it also surprised us by coming up right in front of our boat! This left us with an incredibly close encounter and left us all with a high! To end we then also saw a pod of 6 white-beaked dolphins, travelling very leisurely in the bay. After this, we had to end our tour and after a short ride back, we made it back safe and sound to the harbour.

14:00 - We headed out on a misty afternoon. The sky was gray but our spirits were high. We did not have to drive far until we reached the first sighting of the day, a humpback whale. This one came very close to the boat and went right underneath us. You could really see the big white pectoral fins through the water. This was an amazing encounter. We continued a bit further and found another humpback whale. This one was interesting because it had clear rake marks on its dorsal fin, maybe from orcas. We had a quick look at this one since we wanted to avoid larger crowds and continued on. We found a third humpback whale and stayed with this one for a bit. However, the second whale we visited was breaching in the distance so we hurried back. we saw it breach a few times from a distance and then it started to pec slap a lot and rolling on its back. It was incredible. It was also doing repetitive tail slaps, impressing everyone on board. We also got to witness one breach quite close. We headed back to the third humpback and stayed for a little bit before we headed back to the harbour. What a fantastic day out at sea!

16:00 - The weather had taken a turn for the worse and heavier clouds and rain had rolled in again. This did not faze us though and so bravely we dressed up and set out to sea once more. First, we paid our respects to the puffins of Akurey and then we went further into the mist to find whales. We searched and searched in the relentless rain, not giving up no matter the weather. Sadly though, the whales seemed to not be willing to show themselves this time 'round. We saw but a glimpse of a minke whale so we had to return to harbor almost empty handed. We did however offer all our guests complementary tickets so they can come back once more to search for our incredible whales!

20:00 - After a day of rain, mist and damp, our passengers were given the responsibility of fixing the weather. They did a tremendous job. The rain ceased and the sea was calm with a big rolling swell as we headed out in to the bay. We could even see a bit of sunshine in the far distance. We spotted some feeding birds, and Óðinn and I sighted a very distant humpback whale going for a dive. We went off to find it but it proved elusive and we could not find it again. There were plenty of Atlantic puffins around with beaks full of sand eels so clearly some good food around! We continued our search and were rewarded with a white beaked dolphin which showed interest in us, circling the boat for ten minutes or so. After a while it became bored with us and we carried on our search for wildlife. Soon we spotted a minke whale, and then another. We caught a bit of lunge feeding and the pair swimming together, it was a very nice sighting considering the swell was quite significant but gentle. On our way back in we stopped at both Akurey and Engey where we enjoyed a very high tide enabling us to get very close to the island and the wonderful puffins. Unusually we also saw about 80 cormorants gathered on the rocks! Then it was time to head home. It was a great tour with lovely guests.
