Whale Diary

10:00 -  Today the seas were very flat, and we started a foggy tour next to Reykjavik, first stopping by the sea the many puffins in Akurey! Then, we started heading out into the bay, with eager eyes ready to spot anything. As we sailed out, we started to have less fog and more choppy seas. We then spotted a big flock of birds, that had a couple of dorsal fins under them! We had about 4 white-beaked dolphins, that came very close to our boat and then disappeared. But this was not the only species: about 3 minke whales were also lunge feeding, loving all the food available in that area. We stayed with them a bit until we found another flock of birds, an even bigger one! We spotted a big blow amongst them, and we saw a humpback whale that was very active! This one was going fast to different directions and then coming back to us, and it even all of a sudden, rolled in front of us, showing its belly, fluke and long pectoral fins! Wow!! Then, it lunge fed next to the birds, as we also watched about other 5 minkes here and there and some of them lunge feeding too! Then, we came back to the harbour, happy to see nature as it fullest!

12:00 -  We went out on the bay under a thick cover of fog. Despite the limited view distance, we found a pod of at least 15 white beaked dolphins that were playing on the surface. We stayed with them and soon saw the blows of 2 humpback whales not far away. We slowly made our way towards them, still followed by the dolphins. As we got closer to the humpbacks we were suddenly surrounded by them, the dolphins and additional  6 minke whales that also came to the area. As it was not enough, a single harbour seal also popped up in between the other animals.  Reason was the massive amount of small fish that they all like to feed on. So much action of so many species together was a joy to see.

14:00 -  The skies were still foggy from the volcano but the deeper into the bay we went, the more the skies cleared and the better visibility got. On this tour we managed to spot 3 humpback whales, all very calm and going on nice short dives, as well as 3 minke whales, that were spending their time in the same area. We also saw a pod of around 8 white-beaked dolphins. Within this pod were even 2 calves travelling along, with one of them carefully approaching our boat a bit at times! All these animals were in the same area, so we were able to just travel around from individual to individual, and species to species, getting to spend a good time with all of them. What a perfect day!

16:00 -  Again we went out in to the fog on calm seas. At least this time the sum tried to get through the clouds every now and then. After some searching we came across a speedy minke whale that was traveling fast and got really close to our boat. It surfaced just a few meters away and dove underneath our boat to then disappear in the distance. What a thrilling first sighting! Not far away we spotted the blows of a humpback whale and went closer to get a good look at the animal. It was traveling on the surface and then decided to roll on its side and slap the water with its massive pectoral fins. Soon after we got close to a pod of about 15-20 white beaked dolphins that were playing on the surface and decided to get a closer look at our boat. The swam along us and we got a good look at them and the small young ones that were traveling with their mothers. A wonderful tour with great sightings.

20:00 - We sailed out through a thick layer of mist, drifting in from a recent volcanic eruption. The sea was calm ahead of us as we made our way straight to Akourey island where thousands of puffins come to breed each summer. After we admired our little cute friends we set course towards the open waters. It didn't took long until we found the first pot of white beaked dolphins. Really curious cruising, jumping and playing around us filling us with exactment. Not long after we spotted our fist blow! Not one but two humpback whales feeding and cruising together showing us there beautiful flukes. We manage to find two more humpback whales and at least 10 minke whales that where feeding together that made our tour truly memorable.
