Whale Diary

11:00 - With sunshine and low southeasterly winds, we had the perfect conditions for a whale-watching day. Both of the Thruma boats found a humpback whale, but the two separate individuals were each taking their sweet time staying under. While Thruma IV went out to explore some other areas of the bay, in search of more surface-active animals, Thruma II persevered with the whale that was going on the very long dives. Our patience paid off - the humpback started coming up more frequently, and he was sometimes quite close to the boats! In the end, we got treated with some beautiful fluke dives and felt super lucky to have seen this beautiful animal.

14:00 - Apparently, the dolphins of Iceland were having a huge get-together this afternoon, and we were very happy to be invited to their party. There were white-beaked dolphins everywhere we looked, spread out in groups of 5-6 individuals, but in total probably around 70 in the bay. After some very fun moments with the dolphins, we continued our journey further into the bay and saw the blow of a humpback whale! The whale was diving for over ten minutes so we had to be a bit patient, but after some time he started coming up more frequently and closer to the boat! Since it was getting a bit crowded with everyone wanting to see the humpback, we made our way to a second individual that was in the direction of the Hvalfjord. This one was also diving for a long time, but we were kept company by some dolphins, a very quick minke whale and lots of seabirds while we waited for it to resurface. On the way back to Reykjavík we crossed paths with even more dolphins (when we said they were everywhere we weren´t exaggerating), but then it was really time to head to harbour.
