Whale Diary

09:00 - What a fantastic tour! We set out with high hopes as yesterday we had very good sightings, and the adventure did not disappoint! We sailed straight out, and after about 25 minutes, we had struck incredible luck! We found, in the same area, around 6 minkes whales, 2 humpback whales, and 2 groups of white beaked dolphins, totaling around 10 individuals. It was amazing, as the whales and the dolphins seemed to be interacting, and the dolphins were extremely playful and curious, coming on many occasions very close to the boat. One of the humpback whales we identified as Pep, an old friend of us, which we were very happy to see in the bay again. On the way back we also spotted a small group of harbour porpoises, around 5 individuals. It was a fantastic tour.

13:00 - We had a great tour with amazing sightings. The weather was also very nice, warm for icelandic conditions and the sea was quit nice. As we headed out to the spot of the previous tour we saw splashes from the distance. It was a pod of 7 White Beaked Dolphins, racing through the waves. They were swimming around our boat and playing in our bow wave. Then they left us and moved on to another bigger boat, that was next to us. But we saw a big blow and then a pectoral fin, reaching out of the water, about 100m away from us, so we went there. We found the first, of 3, Humpback Whale! Also another pod of dolphins were around it, jumping next to it and playing with it. Also a few minutes after the other pod of dolphins joined and then we had about 20 Dolphins around. The Humpback didn't really interact, it was probably feeding. Coming up and down the water column showing us its fluke and sometimes rolled to the side, only showing us half of it's fluke. After a while it stayed down for a while longer than before and we heard on the radio, that there have been 2 other Humpbacks around. So we made our way to this spot and were lucky. These 2 Humpback Whales were surfacing 2 minutes after we arrived at the spot, showing us their beautiful flukes. Just in time, because we had to head back to the harbor. What a perfect ending to the tour.
