Whale Diary

10:00 - This morning was a fantastic experience! We left the harbour with great weather, including warm temperatures, flat seas and sunny skies. We did a quick visit to Akurey island, to see the tons of puffins living there, and then set coarse into deeper waters. After a few minutes of search, we came across two white-beaked dolphins. They might have been only two individuals, but oh boy, they were curious dolphins, approaching us and checking our boats for multiple minutes. While we were being inspected by the dolphins another one of our boats had a very curious solitary harbor porpoise! This individual surfaced multiple times around the boat. After these pleasant experiences, we moved a few more miles to find a lone humpback whale. This was a large individual, definitely larger than our boat, who eventually got really close to us, before going for a fluke dive, showing it´s tail just a few meters away from us. We then ventured further out into the bay. We searched for a while, without finding any new sightings. But then, we hit the jackpot! One of our captains spotted a pod of eight orcas, including 3 males, 4 females and a juvenile. We spent some amazing time with this apex predators, watching them calmly swimming, before returning back to Reykjavík, extremely happy!

14:00 - The sun was still shining and calm seas greeted us this afternoon as we set sail. First we stopped by our puffin Island Engey. We saw some billing and romance was in the air for our feathered friends. We waved our puffins goodbye and set our sights on the bay. There were many seabirds feeding and so we knew their was plenty of fish in the bay buffet today. Not too long into the tour we spotted the blow of one humpback whale! This individual was on the larger side, and we could very clearly hear it vocalize and breath as they surfaced for air. When they dove, we could see their fluke clearly as they raised it fully into the air. This individual was a focused feeder, but it surfaced frequently. This individual did also rest on the surface for a duration which allowed us a nice look at their tubercles. After multiple surface sequences, and flukes galore, we waved this individual goodbye and headed back to port.

20:00 - With the sun slowly getting lower in the sky, we bundled up and headed out! First we admired our Atlantic puffins at Akurey island. There were tons of individuals in the water as well as on the island, egg season is soon upon us! After a wonderful encounter, we set our course into the bay and went to see who we would spot this evening. It was not very long before we could see splashes spread out in front of us! We had come across 30 white-beaked dolphins! These individuals were moving at speed and it was wonderful to watch them race all around us! We did have a few curious ones surface close to us before they were off again. It seemed like they were off to the races, and while admiring their agility we spotted a blow in the distance so went to see who was in that direction. As we pulled up we witness the lunge feed of one humpback whale! This individual was very sizable and so we could see their blow very clearly and hear them as well! We were treated to multiple surface sequences before we had a wonderful fluke dive! It is alwayts wonderful to be able to see their unique fluke patterns. After a wonderful viewing this individual was starting to surface farther from us and so we waved them goodbye and headed back to port. With the sunset lighting the sky in pink and yellow hues, we came back to port. What a great way to end the day!
