Whale Diary

10:00 - We started this amazing sunny day by going to Akurey to look at the puffins before heading out. After this we went over to Hvalfjöður to see some of the wildlife here. First we saw a small pod of 3 harbour porpoises surfacing a few times. Then close to some birds a bigger body came up in the shape of a humpback whale! This whale was coming up very regularly maybe it was feeding. After a great start we headed back into the bay. Out here we spotted 2 minke whales, the second one was particularly good coming really close to us. We then completed the tour by seeing our last of the main 4 species in Faxaflói by watching a pod of 6 white beaked dolphins. They changed directions lots but again came close to us so we could really appreciate how big these dolphins are. We then returned to the harbour after a great morning.

14:00 - We returned to Hvalfjörður in the afternoon hoping to find the whale from the morning there. When we sailed into the fjord, we could see one humpback whale! We watched this whale surface two times, arching its back and giving us a nice look at its tail fluke both times before it dove into the deep! This whale was a bit shy, however, so we waited for quite a while for it to resurface before we decided to move on. A few moments later, we spotted a playful pod of 3-4 harbour porpoises! These porpoises were living up to their name, porpoising around in the water and even doing small jumps! They came quite close to us at times and we could get a good look at them in detail! After this encounter, we made our way back to the harbour with a stop at the puffin colony on Engey island, where we watched Atlantic puffins dash around in the air and water. A perfect way to end the tour!
