Whale Diary

10:00 - There was a bit of a swell as we sailed out after quick stop for puffins at Akurey. Soon we were among a pod of a few dozen white-beaked dolphins that were spread out in a larger area. They appeared a little shy at first but soon they approached the boat and we all got excellent views. We then decided to look further out in the bay and there we found two minke whales very actively feeding. They surfaced frequently, often both together. We enjoyed this wonderful encounter for a long time until we had to head back for harbour after a great trip!

11:00 - After stopping at Engey to see the adorable puffins, we headed out into the bay. The water was a little bumpy, but this made the tour even more fun! We headed to the area where we have been seeing a lot of gannets for the last few days. Amongst the diving gannets we saw 2 minke whales! They were also feeding and we even saw a lunge feed just below the surface! After a while, the disappeared under the waves. We moved on and shortly after found another Minke Whale! This third whale was more shy than the last ones and we only saw it a couple of times. We started to run out of time after that and had to head back in to the harbour.

14:00 - The wind had increased this afternoon, making the sea a bit rougher. We headed back out to the area where we had had the luck in the morning. Just by this area, we saw a small pod of 5-7 white-beaked dolphins. They didn't seem to want to be social however, because they were changing direction a lot and moving further from the boats. As there were quite a few other whale watching boats around, we decided to move on and find something else. Not too long after leaving the dolphins, we saw more gannets diving. Again, near these birds we found a Minke Whale. However, due to the sea conditions and the behaviour of the minke, we were only able to see it a couple of times before we had to start heading back to the harbour. As the sightings and conditions were not the best, our passengers were offered complimentary tickets to come on one of our Classic Tours to try and see more next time!

15:00 - Same as the previous boat, we headed out to the area where we had great luck in the morning. It took us some time to get there, and as we drove, we got excellent views of the bay, of Whalefjord, and of Akranes. When we got to the area, we searched wide, in big circles. We eventually found a big group of arctic terns and puffins and our hopes grew, but after some time waiting for cetaceans to appear, we decided to leave and head back to port as the conditions were deteriorating. We offered complimentary tickets to the passengers to come on one of our Classic tours to try again!
