Whale Diary

1000- The morning was quite cloudy but there was almost no wind as we sailed out of the harbor, so everyone on board was excited for whale watching. We set off and eventually we found a pod of 5 harbor porpoises that were surprisingly friendly and came quite close to the boat a few times. A few minutes later we spotted 3 minke whales that were also really friendly and they seemed to be feeding. While watching the minkes we were pleasantly surprised to spot a Humpback Whale! It was doing relatively short dives and coming up quite regularly and at this point we were basically surrounded by the porpoises and minkes as well. After a couple of minutes we were surprised by 2 more humpback whales and one of them surfaced super close to our rib! By then it was time to head back to harbor but we still had some time to stop by Lundey and we saw some puffins, northern fulmars and Eider ducks. It was an amazing tour and everyone on board was super happy!!

12:00 - We headed out in good weather conditions to find some whales and dolphins. We were lucky, it didn't take us long to find a pod of 7 White Beaked Dolphins. They were swimming around us and surfacing, playing with the waves. We left them to see if we could find something else. And we did, we found 5 Minke Whales feeding and then 1 Humpback Whale appeared in the distance, so we went to see him. We saw him surfacing for a bit and then he showed us his fluke. After waiting for about 10 minutes we lueft because we had to go back to port.

14:00 - There was low wind, but a bit of swell made for some fun waves. The bay was full of life with birds everywhere, and marine mammals spread out all over. We first found a Humpback Whale and a Minke Whale, and then we spotted the splashes of some white-beaked dolphins. Since the dolphins seemed to be very active, we decided to check them out. We found ourselves in the middle of a feeding frenzy, with dolphins surfacing all around and northern gannets and great black-backed gulls plungediving for fish. Later on, we found an area with even more birds, the same Humpback Whale as in the beginning, and countless more minke whales. What an incredible tour!

16:00 - We went out when the weather was a little rainy, but we were sure that we would see some awesome things on this tour. At first we saw 5 White Beaked Dolphins logging, then a few minutes later they became more active and swam next to our boat. At one point we left them because we saw a big blow in the distance - Humpbacks ! There were 2 of them! Surfacing next to eachother and then fluking. We waited for about 6 minutes and all of a sudden one of them did a peduncle throw! It was amazing, everyone was thrilled! After that they took a dive again and we waited for them to surface again. This time they were pretty chill and just logging for a bit and then took a dive again. After that we had to leave. We went back in good weather but choppy seas. But everyone had fun on the ride. It was a great tour!

20:00 - After a really great day we set off for tonight's tour, very excited. On the way out it was pretty smooth and we headed to the same area as we had been most of the day. Before we got there we got a nice look at a Minke Whale that surfaced a few times including one super close to our boat. There was then lots of birds ahead of us so we decided to head and see what was going on. It was crazy here! There were so many white beaked dolphins, about 20-30. They were jumping lots and swimming all around our boat. But they were also swimming right on top of 2 humpback whales. One of these whales didn't seem to appreciate the dolphins very much as it was rolling, tail slapping and staying upside down for a bit. The interaction was very cool to watch. We then ended up following a third humpback for a bit which was surfacing a bit less regularly but usually quite close to us. During all of this we also saw another 7-8 minkes. In the distance we then saw a humpback breaching! It seemed to be one of the pair from earlier so we headed to it. We got a nice look at it and the other humpback who still had dolphins swimming around them. It was then time to head home. On our way back we had a look at the puffins by Akurey to end an incredible tour.
