Species seen today: Humpback whales, minke whales, white-beaked dolphins.

10:00 - Finally, after 5 days of cancelled tour we were able to head out into Faxaflói with one of the most beautiful, calmest days this month. After 30 mins of motoring we found ourselves surrounded by white-beaked dolphins and a few minke whales. It was very hard to know for sure how many we saw on this tour as everywhere we went there they were. All in all we much have encountered at least 20-30 scattered dolphins, 5-7 minke whales. After all that we heard of a humpback whale around, as there were many boats already around the whale we waited until some left. Once we got there we were alone, it did take us a little while to find it but Miquel spotted a blow in the distance. We saw a pod of white-beaked dolphins close to where the whale went down. We slowly motored towards them and went into neutral once there. Soon the humpback whale surfaced just meters away, a new individual we hadn´t seen before and the dolphins too. They both circled us obviously feeding. We were so amazed and lucky to have such a close encounter from such a beautiful, powerful animal.

12:00 - We motored srtraight out to the exact area the humpback whale seen on the previous tour but it was no where to be seen. Soon a pod of 4-5 white-beaked dolphins got our attention and then suddenly a minke whale. They were all moving fast and some of our passengers still did not get a glimpse. We did a big sweep of the area in the hope of finding the humpback but in the end we came back to the orginal place and found more playful white-beaked dolphins and a few very hungry minke whales. At one point we were in nuetral for at 15mins watching a minke whale surface feed under a large flock of birds, you could even see the pink belly and ventral grooves. It was incredible.

14:00 -

The day was getting better and better. We saw so much on this tour. First a little minke whale then we found an area where we idled for 10-15 minutes watching a minke whale surface lunge feed under a flock of seabirds. Then we went to see two humpback whales the larger whale watching vessels had found, a known pair called Mariupol and Neila. They were super chilled and barely travelling, just milling in the same spot. We stayed with the paid for a while but saw a 3rd humpback in the distance. We decided to go an investigate before heading home. We were unable to see the 3rd inidvidual, obviously taking super long dives but we did manage to find a small pod of 4-6 white-beaked dolphins to complete our trio for the day. A fantastic day out on the bay.
