Whale Diary

16:00 - This beautiful afternoon, we headed out onto the bay after a brief stop at Akurey, the largest Atlantic puffin colony near the Reykjavik harbour. As we went deeper and deeper into the bay, the wind began picking up, and began forming larger and larger waves on the surface, but nothing could stop us on our search for a whale. We soon spotted a fluke and headed over for a better look. It was a humpback whale! We followed this individual for a while, when all of a sudden it breached! We were stunned, but before we could pick our jaws up off the floor, it breached again! We were treated to a grand total of 3 large breached and 2 big head slaps from this whale, and even got to hear it trumpeting! Satisfied with this sighting, we continued on and had our sights set on two large flocks of birds, both of which ended up having very large very hungry whales beneath them! We had stumbled upon the buffet spot of the evening and even got to see some bubble spirals forming on the surface, evidence of bubble-net feeding! We got to spend the rest of our time with these two feeding whales, one of which surfaced mere meters from us on its way to get in a better position for their next lunge. Happy with all these beautiful behaviours we got to witness, we turned around and began heading back towards the harbour. What an exciting tour!
