Whale Diary

10:00 - Sailing out with the clouds hovering over us, we had the chance to get a plentiful start of the day: all around, more puffins than the eyes could see, a great greeting for us to keep going ahead. Later on, we sailed out fast enough to see 3 humpback whales, all of them diving to feed, with even one of them breaching in the distance ! Throughout the tour, we kept spotting smalll pods of harbor porpoises, with over 10 individuals sighted. As we headed back, we even had the chance to see (and smell) 2 minke whales really close to our boat !

12:00 - This noon tour was rainy but despite that the seas were still very calm. After we said hi to the crowed puffin island we sailed further out. It didn't take too long before we found 2 pods of 2 harbour porpoises and We got some good looks at them while they were going about today's business. A fair bit further out, we then found a humpback whale! closer inspection then revealed it to be the ol´ reliable "bubbles" a friendly humpback we´ve seen around here quite often this season. For a moment it was logging a bit, but then he picked up the pace and he travelled onwards, lifting its fluke nice and high! After that we sailed back to harbour, happy we braved the weather today to once again enjoy the amazing wildlife.

14:00 - We sailed into the bay under this lovely rain that has followed us all day long. Good thing the animals are already wet and do not mind the rain. First stop was Akurey for some sight of the cute puffins. After a bit of time with them we decided to go to the area were something was seen on the previous tours, which was very far into Faxafloi. After a long navigation we made it to the area and there it was, a humpback whale. The whale showed up a lot of time for us, traveling around the area at quite some speed. When got the time to say goodbye, we were super lucky to finally see it barely a couple meter away from our boat, super calm and slowly lifting its tail very high into the air to perform a deeper dive. It was the first time we got to properly see the tail. After the best view of the animal we started our long way back home, still under the rain, but happy.

16:00 - This afternoon the rain had settled a bit while the waves had increased. Once again we ran into the humpback whale "Bubbles" who, as always, treated us to some very high fluke dives and many surfaces. It was a treat to stay with this whale but after a good amount of time we gave them their well-deserved rest and moved onwards. It didn´t take too long however to find a big pod of around 10 white-beaked dolphins! This pod was incredibly active and came often very close to the boat, swimming right by and even underneath us! They kept moving and even jumping all around us, giving us an amazing time! Once again it was well worth face the Icelandic"summer" weather!

20:00 - The rain had finally stopped for this adventure into the bay. We first stopped to see the puffins on Akurey. After a nice view of these lovely birds we headed into Faxafloi bay, toward an area far away were we had previously seen a whale. As we started our adventure, to our surprise captain Miquel spotted a blow only 10 minutes after the start of the ride. It was a humpback whale. This whale was quite close to the harbour, and was moving fast in the North West direction. We followed it for a while, getting some very nice views on its impressive body and its nice tail as it was making deeper dives. After a significant amount of time with the whale and a nice fluke dive close to the boat we decided to ride a bit more to explore more areas. We saw some birds on the water surface, but no other trace of more cetaceans. It´s ok, we had a beautiful tour already with this surprise humpback whale. We ran out of time and made our way back into the harbour, and we barely had rain the whole tour, what a treat.
